In these pages, "love makes the world go 'round".
The illustrations treat eyes and hearts to magical adventures of culture and color.
I'm proud to own this book at a time when (hopefully ) all are taking a collective second look at ourselves.
I first saw this book at a reading for kids of international families. We got there a little late and we didn't know why the kids were so mesmerized by the story.
As we started paying attention, I realized it literally spoke to families of all backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, religions and traditions. No wonder everyone there felt so captured by the stories. I grabbed a copy and I was blown away by all its illustrations, and I recognized a few elements from Mexican as well as Mediterranean cultures, among others.
It also arrived at a moment where we need more understanding of people from different backgrounds, it's our differences that make us stronger as a nation, and we can all relate to the story of a magical being (grandma), leaving her granddaughter a legacy of love, compassion and magic in the form of a compelling and simple family story.
The author also had a few other related items for sale (a pendant, scarves, etc.) which were adorable (I think you can buy them at shopvida and she said that a percentage goes to the Malala fund which I thought was amazing). I bought my daughter the scarf with one of the illustrations from the book and she loves it.
Hope this review helps, we need to support authors who are actively creating amazing stories that help improve our understanding of different cultures in such creative and heartwarming ways!
Update: I bought a copy of this little jewel for my daughter's classroom and it's now in the permanent library and her teachers love it
