Syn could not catch a break in this book. She’s fighting everything and everybody, even her own feelings. She took hit after hit and although occasional cracks would form, she just kept standing back up, but even she knew that at some point she would break.
She fought her destiny hard, maybe too hard. The way she fought against what everyone knew was inevitable, at times she came off as irrational and childish but I also completely understood why she was acting like this and my heart just broke for her.
Ryder made me want to rip his head off several times in this book. He has secrets and he’s not sharing. He doesn’t think he’s capable of loving, but he wants Syn with every fiber of his being and being the Fae he is, he’s hell bent on keeping her no matter what he has to do. As the secrets he’s been keeping come to light, especially the ones concerning Syn and some of the things he orchestrated in the past, Syn starts to wonder if she will ever be able to forgive him, and you just can’t really blame her.
Despite her feelings toward him, Syn needs Ryder to teach her how to survive as a Fae. The times they spent together alone brought them closer, but also served as a reminder that he’s fae through and through, and she was raised human. It’s easy to forget their fundamental differences, but unless they both keep that in mind they are doomed.
Even with all the issues, these two are freaking hot when it comes to the sexy times. I looked forward to each and every sex scene, and there are a lot of them. It doesn’t matter how much at odds these two are, when they get together all those feelings they deny are front and center and the already hot chemistry they have just explodes.
Just like the first book, just when you think things are finally going to go well for Syn and even Ryder, a huge twist hits and throws everything into disarray. The danger to Syn is increasing and it’s going to take everything Ryder has in him to keep her alive. Worlds need be saved which means sacrifices must be made, and those expected sacrifices are huge. Even on a reread, I knew what was coming, and it sent me reeling.
Taunting Destiny was a heartbreaking, mysterious, dark, emotional rollercoaster ride that had me constantly wondering how this could ever turn out well. I don’t think I will ever get tired of rereading this series as I impatiently wait for more.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal steamy romance.
The ability to enthral is potent. That is what this author has in abundance. This novel like the first one is fast paced, full of constant unfolding action and agendas, and is intricate and highly sensual not just in the behaviour of the characters but in the wording that the writer chooses and manipulates. Ryder is so appealing that it is hard to step away and see him as just a character in a book. He is strong, darkly mysterious and down to earth in his wants and desires. Similarly Syn becomes someone you want to shake sense into but at the same time love for her vulnerability. He is a volcano of lust constantly spitting out fire but with her it overflows and takes everything in its path with it. Whilst Synthia has the strength to accomplish anything she is still at heart a woman whose desire to be loved is intrinsic and not a product of her environment but of her soul. The lava is all-consuming so it is hard to give in when common sense tells you lava burns. We may hate the way Ryder behaves towards her, he is arrogant, sexually demanding and forceful but...what was that I was saying about hating something? As reader we know that inside somewhere in the recesses of his black heart she is his weakness no matter the world he comes from, and that for her he will adapt, change perhaps not, but bend enough so that her essence is maintained...? This is hypnotic. What woman doesn't want to be the one?
Amelia Hutchins creates reader involvement from that first page so we enter into this magical world where dark and light blend not necessarily nicely but always fiercely and enjoy the ride into the suspension of real life with a great deal of delight.
P.S. I hate the cliff hanger ending as it means I have to wait.
