Tawana "Honeycomb" Petty is a mother, social justice organizer, youth advocate, poet and author. She was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and is intricately involved in water rights advocacy, visionary organizing and digital justice work. Petty is the author of Introducing Honeycomb, Coming Out My Box, and the Petty Propolis Reader. She is also the creator of Petty Propolis, a sponsored project of Allied Media Projects. Petty uses the various components of Petty Propolis to encourage creativity and nurture visionary potential through art and organizing.
Petty is a past recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award, the Woman of Substance Award, the Women Creating Caring Communities Award, the Detroit Awesome Award, the Black Law Student Association's Justice Honoree Award, and was recognized as one of Who’s Who in Black Detroit in 2013 and 2015. She is a board member of the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership, a Data Justice Community Researcher for the Detroit Community Technology Project, a founding member of the Our Data Bodies Project (ODB Project), a Detroit Equity Action Lab (DEAL) Fellow, and a member of the The Detroit Digital Justice Coalition.
In addition to Petty’s community organizing work, she performs and presents across the globe. Petty has appeared on several television and radio programs and her work and writings have been featured in numerous publications.
