Product Description
"Come out and take it, you dirty yellow-bellied rat ." Independent cabbie Matt Nolan is primed to let his fists and handgun deliver payback after a big taxi firm uses intimidation and violence to squeeze out small-timers. James Cagney plays Nolan, a role suited to his pugnacious, post-The Public Enemy persona. Ramming rival cabs that have hemmed him into a too-tight parking spot, slugging the hoofer (George Raft) who bested him in a dance contest, tracking down the killer of his brother, Cagney shows why he was the era's "terrier of the screen" (Mordaunt Hall, The New York Times). Loretta Young costars as the femme who tries to tame Nolan. And Roy Del Ruth directs this swiftie as if his cab were waiting and the meter running.

Ah well. Such was the Hollywood version of a Dead End kid all grown up and his long-suffering woman.
I’m donating my copy to the library.
A good movie with an unforeseen twist! Saw it about 3x!
But Cagney’s supposedly loveable hot-head falls a bit short of loveable and Young’s character is way too forgiving. Bad decisions are normal in crime films, but here they’re sometimes unconvincing.
The dance contest, featuring George Raft, gives the stars a chance to dance and shows how easily Cagney’s character loses his temper, but it might have been given further significance in the plot. The cars are historically interesting, as are views of Times Square, such as one showing the large neon advertisement for Pepsodent toothpaste, which was there from 1930 to 1933, and Loew’s State Theater, there from 1921 to 1987 in various forms. Unfortunately, a performance by black singers and musicians is staged in a plantation-like atmosphere at the “Cotton Pickers Club,” a fictional version of the historical Cotton Club.
Well, a little on the movie. It's a typical James Cagney film, which means if you like him you'll like this. Not one of his best, in my opinion - personally I am partial to "Strawberry Blonde" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" - but I'm glad I own it.
Just note that this is not what I would call a restoration. Image quality is fine, comparable to what you'd see if you watched it on TV. But, having recently watched restorations of "Key Largo" and "Casablanca", I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. The restored films jump off the screen - they are so sharp and clear they could have been made yesterday. It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the movie, but it didn't enhance it either.
Beautiful Loretta Young holds her own as Cagney's "girl".
A little "fun fact": Cagney speaks fluent Yiddish in his opening scene. I lived for many years in Switzerland where "Swiss German" is spoken. Well I was shocked to hear Cagney speaking what I thought was Swiss German! Who knew? But found out it was Yiddish which is very close to Swiss German.
Cagney also displays his dancing talents with a mean Foxtrot, and a short tap dance.
Enjoyed the story and acting. One of the few Cagney movies I didn't see on TV as a kid.
