This shave oil smells fantastic, but otherwise I was disappointed. It is supposed to be "pre-shave", but I found that it was a little on the sticky side and made it difficult for the soap to go on over it. Then, during the shave, it really gummed up the blades and left a oily residue in the sink. I think if you stick with a good shave soap or cream, you don't really need the "preshave."

First, the box I received this bottle in states it has a sandalwood scent but I did not see that on Amazon's page. Other than that I read the other 4 reviews on here before I tried this item out and I am glad I gave it a shot. The oil is indeed thick, as it should be, but after putting a few drops in the palm of your and & rubbing your hands together vigorously the oil goes on exceedingly well. I did try leaving the oil on before applying my lather but after a couple tries I have found that removing the top layer of oil with warm water does allow for a cleaner shave as my safety razor does not deal with the thickness of the oil very well. Removing the excess still left my skin moisturized and protected as long as you have your lather ready to go right after you rinse the excess off.

I have no complaints with the price for such a product & it is a welcome addition to my morning routine. I am now thinking about replacing my current aftershave gel with ToOBS's sandalwood offering.

Pre-shave oils are debated by enthusiasts -- some love them, some don't see the point, and some like them but think anything other than homemade is a ripoff.

What does a pre-shave oil do? The usual explanation is that it serves as a skin moisturizer, not as a shaving lubricant. So, you put a couple of drops in your hand and work it in to your skin and give it a minute or so to absorb before you start your normal shaving routine. If your skin is greasy you've put on too much.

Do they work? Reports vary. I use a straight edge and I find pre-shave oils help me with my shave but they are not the most important step (having wet hair and well lathered face matter more). But my skin isn't very dry so maybe they will do more good for you than for me.

Are they worth the price? This is where it gets tricky. The ingredients in most pre-shaves are pretty simple -- as good oil or oil mix for skin conditioning (e.g. 2 parts castor + 1 part olive) and a non-skin-irritating scent. For the price of a single ounce of Taylor of Old Bond you could probably make yourself a half gallon. But oils go rancid so unless you can split with a lot of "shaving buddies" I'm not sure you'll save that much in the long run.

The Taylor of Old Bond pre-shave smells nice and a couple of drops will probably work for most people. Still, I doubt you'll get more than a few months for a bottle so it comes down to how much you wish to spend on shaving. If you are shave with one of those expensive multi-bladed disposable monstrosities you may not notice the extra 20 cents or so per day this will add. If you use a straight razor or a dual edge safety blade you may think differently.

Anyway, I really like Taylor of Old Bond Street products and I like their pre-shave oil -- it smells great and a couple of drops do a nice job. But it's expensive; in my opinion, silly expensive.

This has a wonderful scent and the only way to shave! Once you have used a shaving oil to soften your beard and bald head you can't shave any other way. And the scent gives you a little aroma therapy...A great product.

It smells great! And goes on nicely (keep in mind its saponafied so you are supposed to wash it on with hot water). And... as if that wasn't enough, it does a great job of lubing your skin before you put on the shaving cream and softening up your stubble for a nice smooth shave.

Just received this today and all ready gave it a try. Changed to a DE razor about a year ago but have just recently up-graded my razor ( Shaveology ) and following their suggestions on their web site, including an e-book, I am now ready to enjoy the "Wet Shave" experience.

This oil DOES go a long way. I was hesitant in making the purchase because of the small 1.06 oz size. I do have and love the Taylor of old Bond St. Sandalwood shave cream, so I decided to trust them and give it a shot. Glad I did. Granted a have a beard so I am basically just shaving my cheeks and my throat area. All I used was my fingertip on the bottle and rubbed the oil on my skin. As it started to feel used up I dabbed it again. Anyway, at this rate, this small bottle is going to last a long time.

How was the shave you ask? I am no expert at this point, but even I was able to feel a difference in how the razor felt and moved on my skin. To tell you the truth, even more than the shaving process, is how my face feels now. Hours after I'm done. Usually I feel some after shave irritation on my neck / throat area especially. You know, that kinda burning, scratchy feeling. Well, right now I don't have any of that. So, it looks like this will be a keeper as well.

I give it five stars knowing that it would be thick and probably require a wash before shaving. But if I want a really close shave, or I haven't showered before (which helps to soften my beard) then this oil rubbed in, followed by a wash followed by my usual shaving soap gives me the best results. The fragrance does not quite match my ToOBS shaving soap, but it's close. And a little goes a long way.
