In Teach Happier, Sam Rangel reminds us that teaching, like life, is about balance and building relationships - with our students, our staff and even our families at home. From the very beginning, Teach Happier gets the reader going with setting real, purposeful and as Sam puts it, "amazing" goals. These goals, which must be simple, attainable and authentic are fueled by acts of genuine gratitude for the students that are placed in our classrooms.
The author is currently an assistant principal, but it is also apparrent that he maintains an intentional positive connection to his students and staff. Not all of the situations in the book are happily-ever-after-moments. Some are presented as genuinely frustrating experiences that are tempered by such acts as reflecting upon your "gratitude wall", engaging in a simple smile or taking a moment to just...breathe. As an avid reader, I appreciated Rangel's numerous references to the best-selling authors and books that have inspired his own work.
I actually read the book straight through in one setting, but found myself going back to particular strategies that I wanted to try in my classroom that day. I highly recommend this little gem to all new teachers who are looking for fool-proof strategies for a rewarding teaching experience. But more importantly, I mostly recommend it to veteran teachers who may need a gentle reminder as to why we got into this profession in the first place!
Trust me, teachers! Get this book and keep it as close to your desk as possible! You can thank me later!
