Teach Like a Champion 3.0 by Doug Lemov

Teach Like a Champion 3.0 is packed with real-world techniques to put your students on the path to college. Take a closer look at some of these strategies here:

exemplar planning, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

Write out the key points you want to hear in an ideal student answer when preparing your lessons. This will allow you to evaluate answers more effectively and free your working memory for better listening.

delivery moves, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

Plan not only what questions you'll ask, but of whom and how you'll ask each question. This will allow you to be more strategic about engaging the widest possible range of students in a variety of forms of thinking.

knowledge organizers, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

Prepare for a unit of instruction by organizing key background knowledge about the topic that students should know before delving into study. Put it in one clear, simple place designed for easy encoding in long-term memory.

disciplined discussion, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

Build discussions that develop a given topic with depth and insight and that socialize active listening and awareness among students about how to contribute to the conversation in productive ways.

means of participation, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

Ensure student participation in the classroom in energetic and productive ways by telling students how you'd like them to answer a given question so they don't have to guess. This is a simple, but powerful tool that's commonly overlooked.

phrasing fundamentals, teach like a champion 3.0, doug lemov

One reason students don't answer questions is because the questions are rhetorical, i.e., the teacher doesn't really expect an answer, or even worse, the questions seem rhetorical. The Phrasing Fundamentals technique looks at how to frame questions to generate maximum student interest.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The international bestseller that transforms educators into teaching champions!

Teach Like a Champion 3.0 is the revised, expanded, and up-to-date revision of Doug Lemov’s study of the craft of teaching. Upon studying videos of high-performing teachers, Lemov distills their methods into concrete tangible actions for others to use and adapt. Many of the techniques he describes are now part of the lingua franca of teaching, but here Lemov adds the results of his last five years of study, including new depth and detail to existing techniques and the addition of more than ten new techniques.

Through the techniques, Lemov explains how to Check for Understanding, raise academic expectations, increase the ratio of the cognitive work students do, motivate and engage students, make classrooms more writing-intensive, improve discussions, and anticipate when it is necessary to redirect student behavior so it is positive and productive.

In this edition, Lemov adds extensive discussions of research connecting the techniques more explicitly to cognitive and social sciences. He also updates his discussion based on extensive reflections on issues in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. These additions will help teachers to be clear on the why and the how behind their teaching decisions.

Teachers do the most important work in society (IMO). They do it with little fanfare--often in the face of immense challenge. And though many of them do it with incredible skill they rarely get studied.

That's what I try to do: watch great teachers and describe what they do that makes them a little different.

Teach Like a Champion--which is now completely revised in a much improved version called Teach Like Champion 2.0 that I recommend over the original version--is my most popular book. It's got twelve chapters about every facet of teaching. And be sure to also check out the companion workbook, the Teach Like a Champion Field Guide 2.0, which is chockful of hands-on activities and includes brand new video content.

Practice Perfect, written with my colleagues Erica Woolway and Katie Yezzi, is a meditation on preparing and developing teachers--and others--through practice. Teaching is a performance profession. You do it live. That observation is what got us started in writing the book.

My newest book is Reading Reconsidered--a look at the toughest and most critical part of teaching: literacy. It's written with Erica Woolway and Colleen Driggs and I'm so happy to have had the chance ot work with co-authors with such knowledge and insight.

I should note that I see all of my books as being about tools, not systems. Teaching is a problem-solving endeavor. You use tools, adapt them to the setting and context of your classroom and your personal style. You like some and not others. I believe most of all in the problem solving skills of teachers and offer them tools for that, knowing they will find the best way to apply, adapt, even ignore some of the ideas in my books.

Great book for new and Veteran teachers!
It’s tempting to skip to the strategies- DON’T. Everything at the beginning of the book informs the techniques SO WELL. It gives so much context and is such a practical way to learn how to guide learners successfully while limiting distractions. A must read!

I haven’t even made it to the second page of the first chapter and I already love it. Often times when I purchase books on school curriculum/strategy/management/etc I come away with…well nothing, really. They tend to have a general feel with no real substance, little to nothing that I can actually take back into the classroom. However this book here…just on the first page of chapter 1 I’m coming away with ideas, I’m ready to revamp my lesson plans, I’m excited about the possibilities. This book is just what I’ve been looking for!

This is the latest addition of my favorite book. I have use this book as a book study with colleagues to increase engagement as well as classroom management. It is packed full of ideas with videos, so you can see what they look like in action. I just bought this book for my student teacher to kick off her career and she is so excited to learn more of the strategies that I do in my class and find routines that work for her too

This a great book that American schools and teachers really need right now. It's very marred by the fact that the print quality and page paper stock is so cheap. Even the cover design/font choice seems bad. But the pages are so thin like an old telephone book that they fold easily and are going to tear. Super disappointed in Wiley/Jossey-Bass on that part.

I'd say that every technique in this book is useful but rather than exaggerate I'll just say, depending on the nature of the classroom environment and personality of your students, you can completely use 95% of the techniques in this book--in your classroom, starting immediately!!

In addition, my husband, who has a ph.D in Educational psych uses this book to teach one of his classes and he has had amazing feedback from all of his masters level students (who are currently teaching their own classes). So buy this book if you are a teacher/educator, or maybe even a trainer!!
