This otherwise fine volume falls prey to one serious problem: the editing is very poor. As a result, there are many typos within the C++ program code examples, resulting in programs that simply won't run! As a programmer experienced in several other languages, I was able to determine the problems and correct them; I can only imagine that an individual new to programming, whom this book purports to be able to teach, would be thoroughly confused and frustrated by the many incorrect examples of C++ code he/she finds in this volume.
If and when these problems are corrected, I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone wanting to learn the basic elements of C++. Until that time, it should remain a volume for use only by those who have a firm grounding in computer languages, who can see these small but numerous "bugs" before they bite!
If you are trying to learn to program in C++, avoid this title AND this publisher. If you must read their books for reference--check them out from the local library (and then make a donation with the money you save).
READER WARNING: This book (and other sam's titles) will make you want to slam your head against the wall!
