Like most writers, I have read many a writing book and they all start to sound the same after awhile. The thing I love about this one is that Watts seems to take all the useful things in the other books and put them into one. I often feel like I'm sifting through books and gleaning only a few useful ideas and writing them down in my notebook. With this book I find myself taking notes constantly. If you're looking to spend more time writing and less time reading about writing, I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed the book and it was a quick review of all the things I've learned from other sources. I didn't find anything astonishing in its newness, or anything like that, but it contained sound advice for all writer wannabes. I like it as a reference, to be honest, a book that I can return to for purposes of refreshing myself on certain points. Since the book's not excessively large or wordy, and there are many headings in bold print, it's ideal for such purposes, as far as I'm concerned. A welcome addition to any writer's "how-to" collection!

I have both editions of the Teach Yourself Screenwriting. Those books helped me tremendously to hone my screenwriting craft. Since, I decided to write a novel, I wanted to make sure I had the right information to fulfill this project. Although, screenwriting is similar in terms of story structure (Acts and Sequences), I was more concerned with narrative, point of view, style, and tense. In Teach Yourself, Writing a Novel, I have both editions - paperback and Kindle - I have learn specific tips to help me flesh out my narrative and exposition.

This is a easy book to read. I was able to read it in one day.

I am only about 30 pages into this but I have already learned a lot. I really have NO CLUE about fiction writing, other than what my natural instincts tell me (or fail to tell me, in a case or two.)

This book has, so far, been a really good starting point into fiction writing. It's a good book (at least in the first 30 pages) to hold your existing ideas up to, and see if they seem workable. That's kind of how I'm using it so far.

I plan to purchase more books on specific topics to get more detailed and perhaps get some practice along the way... but this book, for what it is, is a great start.

The book is easy to read and encouraging. I was glad to find details about writing that I've never encountered before. Watts cites many examples in classic lit to study. The main problem I have is that Watts covers his topics in a great rush. I would like him to slow down and give me a more thorough discussion.

This book is filled with practical insights that will not only teach you the structural aspects of composing a novel, but also the unique insights of the author and his own personal insights. I really enjoyed this book...Highly recommend!
