From the Inside Flap

English language learners (ELLs) often face the difficult challenge of learning both a new language and new subject matter at the same time. In Teaching English Language Learners Across the Content Areas, Judie Haynes and Debbie Zacarian offer strategies, tools, and tips that teachers can use to help ELLs at all levels flourish in mainstream classrooms. This book will show teachers how to determine their ELLs' stages of English language acquisition, modify assignments and assessments in different content areas for ELLs at different stages of language development, esure that all ELLs participate fully in lesson activities alongside their English-fluent peers, and communicate effectively with parents and guardians of students from diverse cultures.

Real-life examples of lessons from elementary, middle, and high school that have been modified for ELLs in language arts, math, science, and social studies classes show how to effectively put the authors' recommendations into practice. A glossary of important ELL and ESL terms is included as well, for those who are new to teaching ELLs. Whether novice or veteran, all teachers of ELLs will benefit from this wonderfully practical guide to ensuring that ELLs learn English by learning content and learn content while learning English.

It's one thing to teach a child to speak English. It's another to teach them history while they're still learning English. "Teaching English Language Learners: Across the Content Areas" is a guide for teachers who have English as a Second Language students in their class rooms and how to cope with the language barrier of a child who is trying to grasp a language that they won't learn over night. The stages of language mastery, working these children with their peers, and talking to the parents and guardians, "Teaching English Language Learners" is a vital resource for any educator who will be faced with such a child.

I read most of this book while sitting on a beach in Maine one weekend. That doesn't mean it's a typical summer beach read. (It's not as fun or steamy as the ones I grab from the new fiction shelf at the library.) I did, however, find it very well written with a concise, accessible style. I've worked with English learners for 20 years and have tried to keep current on recent research through graduate classes, workshops, and independent study. This book presents the latest research and offers strategies for all grade levels. It encourages teachers to know their students, to differentiate instruction, and to plan for multiple ways that students can show what they have learned. The authors are not preachy. They understand that differentiating instruction for English learners is challenging and requires collaboration with peers and support from administration. I will facilitate an inquiry group at my school this year, and this is the text we will read and discuss. I look forward to the conversations this book will generate!

I am a high school ELD teacher, EL coordinator, and head of the EL department. I have been looking for something to assist our EL teachers across all content areas since our district can't afford prof. dev. due to budge cuts. This book is excellent. I must have for all EL teachers even those that have been in the field as long as I have. One should never stop trying to improve and this offers specific strategies and lessons on how each was used to give a better idea on how to apply it in your classroom.
