About the Author

Kellie Marcarelli is a middle school science teacher and department chair at Pershing Middle School in the San Diego Unified School District, where she teaches eighth grade physics and chemistry. Beyond the classroom, Kellie serves as a trainer, teacher-leader, and curriculum evaluator and assists in the screening process for the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Her professional experience includes working as a staff developer for the Middle School Science Education Leadership Initiative (MSSELI), the California Math and Science Partnership program, and the San Diego Unified School District; presenting regularly at NSTA’s national conference as well as state and regional science education conferences, and working with WestEd’s K-12 Alliance. She is also actively involved in STEM outreach with local professionals in the science community. She is the recipient of the California State Science Fair Teacher of the Year, the San Diego Science Alliance Partnership Teacher of the Year, and the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair Teacher of the Year awards.

Edited on December 17, 2011 to add: Since posting this review, my use of interactive notebooks in my science classes has become much more intensive and sophisticated. I continue to refer back to this book to refine what I am doing, increase student engagement and help the students make their notebooks into tools that they maintain with zeal and guard with care. Not everything I do came from this book, but this is the book that got me started using notebooks so that they now contain a complete and detailed record of all that the kids study through the year. Looking at any student's notebook, I can quickly tell a parent or administrator exactly what that student knows and exactly which standards, objectives, vocabulary, and content knowledge have been covered during the year.

Having used notebooks for reading and writing in lower grades, I was already convinced of the value of having students keep notebooks when I became a science teacher several years ago. I was unsure however, how to apply or modify the techniques and activities I had learned from studying the methods of Pinnel and Fountas in the science classroom.

With an awareness however, that "real scientists" are adamant about keeping timely and accurate notes, and a general feeling that students leave school not really knowing how to use a notebook as an efficient and powerful study aid and learning tool, I resolved to move forward with my own version of an "interactive science notebook". The results were promising. But after two years, I continued to feel that my student's notebooks were less than I had hoped for. Unfortunately I found little in the professional literature to help me help my students to keep better and more useful science notes.

I purchased this because I am a biology teacher in an urban high school. Attendance for quite a few students is so poor and it is a struggle to teach content in innovative and acceptably challenging ways. I read through this book and began planning for next year and it is making me even more excited about teaching. It supports inquiry based learning and differentiated instruction. I am so excited about this approach!!!

This book was surprisingly unhelpful. I have been gradually moving towards interactive notebooks, and I was hoping this book would help me go all-in for next year. The book describes how the author formats interactive notebooks in her 8th grade science classroom. (The overall format is a big ideas page, followed by inputs on right pages and outputs on left pages, followed by a unit thesis paper, followed by a self-reflection paper.) The book does NOT describe specific activities (like making flip charts, foldables, etc.). In fact, she mentions that she assigns the interactive part of the notebook to her kids as homework, something I could never do with my 9th graders.

I think this book is great (ignoring the fact that the writing is too vague) IF you teach more advanced kids that regularly handle project-based learning and extensive writing (The "Self Reflection" student example provided was 3 typed pages long; The "Unit Thesis" student example provided was 10 paragraphs long.) However, I've found information on interactive notebooks that is more applicable to my remedial students elsewhere.

This book was a perfect intro for someone who has not implemented interactive science notebooks. It has guided me through my first year working with ISNs and I love it. My only comment is the book doesnt really address absences and make-up work.

I got this for my wife, who teaches 7th grade life science. She was so excited about this that she's hardly stopped talking about it. Mostly that it will help give the kids a LOT more ownership over their learning experiences, as well as a positive and tangible way to organize their ideas, with opportunities for self-reflection and review over time, thus spiraling all those lessons over again.

I want delve more into it myself, as I teach high school physics and chemistry, but I haven't had the chance to sit down with it yet this year. But soon...
