I hope this book will serve as a medium to share my wonderful experiences teaching entrepreneurship to middle school students. I have seen the profoundly positive impact a business curriculum can have on young people, including me. There is much research to support the benefits of exposing young thinkers to entrepreneurship. Also, the programs are consistent with 21st century educational objectives and promote equitable and inclusive learning. Entrepreneurship relies on teamwork, it is cross-curricular in nature, and most importantly, the students absolutely love it. In the first section of the book, I talk about social enterprises, how they operate and why they matter. In a world filled with inequality, there are opportunities to create positive change all around us. I believe that each of us can make a difference.
The second section is a “how to” for volunteers and teachers. It begins with resources and suggestions for how to engage the students with stories of successful business leaders and young entrepreneurs. I have shared the major components of the curriculum that I followed, from idea generation to marketing to creating an elevator pitch. Finally, in Part 4, I have included a sample curriculum for teaching Counting Cupcakes.
