Review

EXCELLENT text that provides clear, realistic answers to questions. For me, this text is the resource I need for my methods classes. It is so reader friendly, both general educators and special educators can use its wealth of information.

All the topics are relevant to preservice and veteran teachers. All the areas are vital to students in the field of special education and can be used as a reference tool throughout their teaching careers.

I used this book in one of my methods classes in college. It is a wonderful book and I am so glad I have it. I highly recommend it to new teachers. It provides insight and activities for teaching students reading, writing, math, and social skills. This is not a book of theory--it is definitely a methods book. This book also includes one of the most important things a teacher could ever want--a scope and sequence list in the appendix. This book also provides Learning Strategies (COPS, TOWER, and others).

This book is an excellent resource for all special education teachers. I especially recomment it for new teachers because it basically covers, in depth, the information that a first year teacher needs to organize their classroom, implement programs for facilitating teaching (e.g. peer tutoring, setting up reading and math programs, etc.).

It is a very challenging because of the amount of information covered. It teaches approaches to language arts and math (e.g. a concrete, representational, abstract approach to teaching math). It encourages and discusses ways to make teaching a more hands on approach to learning. I love it!

I realize that I rented this text book, but it is in horrible condition. Pages are scribbled on, falling out, and the book is almost broken in half ( the pages are releasing from the binding). I will continue to use this book only because I do not have time to rent/purchase another one. I pray it holds up until the end of my course!

After being a teacher assistant for almost four years, I decided to become certified to teach special education. This was one of the textbooks for my class. I learned so much from this book and it helped me to become certified. I have now been teaching for over four years and I still reference this book when teaching my students.

I had to purchase this book for a Special Education class I am taking for my major. This book has really, really great information in it. There are tons of examples to use for students with LD. There are games, manipulatives, examples, toys, even steps for lessons to use in the classroom. My problem with this book is that it is absolutely awful to read. I am a junior in college and I have definitely been around my fair share of textbooks and this has got to be the worst one of them all. There are charts and diagrams of the examples they suggest but other than that, it's just column after column of words. It is not organized in a way that makes it appealing and this is something I just cannot get past. If you can get past that, it has great information that would be useful to any Special Education teacher, or really any teacher in general. I simply gave it 3 stars because I am indifferent towards the book because of the organization and layout.

I had to buy this textbook last year, as I was getting my teaching endorsement in Special Education. It is a good text, although mostly only useful if you are studying this for ceritification (I haven't used since I've been teaching).

I have always used Cecil's book in my own research in developing materials. It is written clearly, is regularly updated, and presents sound thinking for special educators. If you work with students with learning and/or behavioral problems, this book is essential.
