Editorial Reviews

"Ron Emmons brings his deep knowledge of Thailand and its history to bear in this wonderful adventure romp through the 19th century teak trade." Kevin Rushby, Chief Travel Writer at The Guardian.

"Emmons draws on decades of experience in Chiang Mai to weave together a tale of adventure set around the underexplored northern Thai teak trade."
Bertil Lintner, author of more than 20 books on Asian politics and history.

'A high stakes tale of love, deception and greed with a hint of Robert Louis Stevenson's great Asia-Pacific adventures.'
David Henley, Cognoscenti Books publisher and travel writer.
"An exciting journey into 19th-century Chiang Mai, with an array of phenomenal characters. Wonderfully written and very informative. A must for lovers of period literature and travellers in Southeast Asia."
J.M. Romero (, author of Tao and many other books on Asian culture.
"Emmons leads us on a well-crafted, intimately detailed journey through the rich jungles of the north of Thailand in the days when Siamese diplomacy deftly kept the hungry colonists from her door."
Colin Cotterill, award-winning author of the Dr Siri mystery series.
"Ron Emmons has written a rattling good tale about a truly curious, yet little-known chapter in Thai/Siamese history, when Northern Thailand saw an enclave of mostly British teak loggers and their associates create a quasi-colonial bubble. Ron digs deep into this lucrative, extractive, and at times bombastic society that was replete with its own crew of gamblers, rakes, minor regents, honored kings, elephants, cricket, and mistresses. Among the "gentlemen loggers" was Louis T. Leonowens, whose mother was the infamous Anna from "Anna and the King of Siam" tales. And then there's the missionary doctor who came to do good but did very well (in a different sense) at gathering not souls but his own personal harem. It's all in TEAK LORD, and much more."
Dr John Borthwick, multi-award winning Australian travel author.
