Readers who want a love story will be thrilled by the first half of the book. They will laugh, cry, and be moved by the love between Plata and her mother and between Plata and Jeremy.
Readers who want a thriller will be happier with the second half in which Plata uncovets secrets, conspiracies, and murder.
I found the book disappointing. It didn't know whether it wanted to be a romance or a thriller and, in the end, didn't succeed well in being either.
There are fantastic scene descriptions (you can almost taste the salt air), of what must be a beautiful part of the world - Gulf Coast. The characters are down to earth and very real life (though obviously fictional). The story follows Plata's life through clever flashbacks, that connect the web of relationships that form most people's lives. The story is well paced, keeps your interest with jumps to others perspective and location's (loved the Italian scenes), and gripping in there observation. This author certainly has an eye for detail and a great insight into relationships and events - I was quite shocked by the backstory to the bikers and how the Vietnam Vet's were treated (thankfully changing times). There are corrupt property developers, dirty drugs money, first loves (The Godfather style) and classic Special Forces bodyguards. This one's worth every cent.
