Editorial Reviews

HIM make a welcome return with their 8th studio album Tears On Tape and first on new U.S. label, Razor & Tie. The band's new album, Tears On Tape was recorded in their home country with long-time producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (Apocalyptica, The 69 Eyes) and once again mixed by long time-band associate, Tim Palmer (U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Robert Plant). Formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindstrom, and bassist Mikko "Mige" Paananen, HIM's previous albums have seen them win a worldwide following, becoming the first Finnish act to achieve platinum sales in the U.S.

The last couple HIM albums (Venus Doom and Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice) seemed to have a different style than the other HIM albums to me (more so with Venus Doom). I am happy to say that after listening to the Tears On Tape, they have seemed to go back to their deeper, darker way of writing songs. You can still hear the influence that Venus Doom and Screamworks have on this new album (some upbeat, catchier tempos and choruses) but you can also hear some parts that remind you of their old songs. Overall I am not disappointed one bit with this album, and will be added to the complete collection of HIM albums I already have.

To me the best way to listen to a HIM album, especially a new one, is to put on a nice pair of headphones so you can feel the bass, turn the lights down low, close your eyes, let Ville's baritone voice suck you in and make your own music video in your mind.

EDIT: Well after listening to this album over and over at my desk while working, I can say this seems to be a mix of styles from all their albums.

Can definitely hear the Venus Doom sound right off the bat in "All Lips Go Blue". Razorblade Romance can be heard in "Tears On Tape". Screamworks can be heard in "Into The Night", "Hearts At War" & "Dawn & Quartered". Dark Light can be heard in "No Love". Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 can be heard in "W.L.S.T.D.".

Probably could go on about which albums sound like the songs come from but this is just what I thought of after a couple plays.

Been a Fan for around 10-13 years, and i can say this is a good album, why? listen to it a couple of times and let it grow, you will find yourself coming back to it and singing along in no time.

I'm giving it 5 stars because it looks like they really worked on it and you can really tell there's a lot of heart that was put into it.

I would love to have one more Venus Doom (dark and mysterious)
but then again every HIM album is different , Love the artwork , Love the Lyrics, Love the album.

Compare it to other "metal" "alternative" albums out there, there's nothing quite like this.

fav tracks (so far): All Lips go blue,Love without tears ,W.L.S.T.D, Drawn and quartered .

I was not initially going to write a review, but now felt the need to do so. I personally believe this to be HIM's most mature album. The lyrics are intense, and honest. There is no frill to the words, no hidden meanings, but they are still so powerful in what they convey. It seems to be as though the words are an almost form of acceptance of life, of love, of loss. An understanding that nothing is perfect, but everything is just as it should be. Pain, hope, passion, love, sadness... All serve a purpose, and help to shape us as humans. Help us to grow, learn, and survive whatever may cross into our path.

Musically, this album is gorgeous. Such different styles, woven together to create a beautiful partnership with the lyrics. I am constantly in awe of the ability of the musicians in this band. This album showcases each of them in a fantastic way. You can clearly hear the talent each of these men possess.

The only negative about this album, and I must state I have only heard the mp3 version, is that sometimes Ville's voice is almost completely lost. I don't know if they intentionally set the levels this way, but I wish his voice was a bit more prominent in the songs. I don't know if the cd version of the album is the same, but I am hoping the vocals are a tad more clear.

All in all, I really adore this album. It was emotional, beautifully arranged, and well written. I wish all music could be this well done.

Carrie D.

Edit... After listening to the actual CD of this album, I can say the vocals are much clearer than the mp3 version.

I have been on board since Razorblade Romance and eagerly grab up each new release. After ScreamWorks-Love in Theory and Practice, I was a little skeptical as to whether this recording would ever happen. That record was flawless in every way and seemed like the end of a brilliant career. I guess the story would continue. Indeed, it happened in the biggest and darkest way. It took about a month of repeated listening before it revealed itself and then I finally have grown to love this dark chest of wonders.

First of all, this seems to be focused towards the dedicated fans. Its a bit encrypted for beginners. Its heavy, dark and painful. The main theme is once again the hopelessness of love. Hey, wait a minute, hasn't this been the main thread on every recording? I guess there are no surprises presented. Even if you have never listened to this band before, you can expect to hear about the pain of love. Its rather universal.

Each track blossoms like a dark flower. Its beautiful and poisonous as Mr. Valo lets us experience these feelings with the pathos that only he can describe. The music is consistent with its driving "Love Metal" that seems to only get better on each album. Its like a fine wine that at first seems bitter, then gets mellow and sweet. There are several live concert sing a longs-Tears on Tape and W.L.S.T.D. are those type of swaying back and forth stadium anthems that draw the audience right in. If you ever get a chance, see this band live. They are perfect onstage.

Then comes Hearts at War which is my favorite track. It seems like the spearhead of everything they have ever recorded. No Love, Drawn and Quartered put the frosting on this icy cake that's hard to swallow, yet oh so satisfying once it goes down. This time it ends on a note of hopelessness and promises more. That's it. The tape gets ejected....
