When it comes to in-ear headphones priced above $100, often the question is not if they are good or bad, but rather how good are they and if they represent a good value in terms of their price to sound ratio. The price is often dictated by a number of drivers used in a design, typically in $100-$200 range for a single BA driver and then approximately $100 more for every additional driver. The sound quality is not as predictable and left to manufacturer interpretation of how they think it should be reproduced and delivered to your ears. In my opinion, sound quality is the most important factor, though we would like price to be reasonable too. That is why after careful examination of Audio Technica's new line of IEMs ATH-IM01/02/03/04, I decided to go with their dual driver IM02 model. It was a step back from my previous quad driver models from UE and Westone, but I found it to be an excellent decision, and after a few days of testing I can confirm they deliver an excellent value if you are serious about stepping into a world of audiophile sounds. Here is what I found.

I always start with a packaging of the product, and here Audio Technica didn't disappoint. Beside high quality images, full list of included accessories, and spec in both Japanese and English, it also includes an internal component breakdown to show you in details every piece of the design. I find such presentation to be very educational. Speaking of accessories, IM02 includes 3 pairs of silicone eartips, one pair of Comply foam tips, and a quality storage case. Though I don't consider cables to be an accessory, the new IM line of AT headphones now feature detachable cables which can be replaced in case of failure. As we all know a cable failure is very common with headphones, so being able to replace these is a big bonus.

The Audio Technica IM03 was my first multi-driver earphone. The Klipsch X7i delivered a satisfying sound, but I sought a less microphonic cable arrangement. Behind-the-ear wrap seemed likely to solve this. Plus, I admit to some curiosity as to the sonic benefit three Balanced Armatures might deliver.

I first bought the IM03 almost a year ago, now. Two months shy, actually. I say “first bought” because I returned the first pair. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me slow this down and tell you a story…

When the IM03 arrived, it was marvelous to behold. While significantly bigger than the Klipsch, it fit flush with my ear. I fretted over tips for a time. This was unsurprising. I considered myself a veteran of tip rolling, since I did much of that with both the Klipsch R6m and X7i. The stock tips for the IM03 were down-right painful, and did not seal well. If I remember correctly, I had prepared for this and ordered the Sony Hybrid tips at the same time as the ATH. They arrived a day or two later, since Amazon didn’t stock them.

The Hybrids made the IM03 quite comfortable. As comfortable as the cable would allow (We’ll get to that later). By this time I was already using the Dragonfly DAC with my Galaxy S4. With proper amplification and a capable DAC, the sound quality of this earphone overwhelmed me. The layering and depth is outstanding, the timbre wholly superior to the X7i. Perhaps the IM03 has a little less detail, or maybe it just seems that way because it’s so much warmer and bassier. Audio Technica is the first headphone that gave me an understanding of what “air” meant in audio. The IM03 has a great sense of it, despite all the warmth and bass. I call them my Live Headphones, because they make you feel like you’re hearing the music live in concert.

My Best IEM so far. Its sound is amazing, I love it more than Shure SE425. I was worried about comfortable because the body is so big than others IEM in market but when I wear it, it is so comfortable and lightweight and big body is easy to grab and adjust it in your ears and the price is better than others 3-drivers IEM. I am still waiting for upgrade cable from big company like Fiio, Alo. If anyone know about upgrade cable for ATM-IM series please let me know.

I'm no stranger to headphones, bought many in last 8 years, reviewed many, and i travel weekly. Sold a few on Amazon, probably could sell a few more:-) My cans range from newest B&W, full size, Phiaton Bluetooth, Sure se ~500, whetstone 4R, Bose QC 20i, ultras one Palladium, Beyer T5p, Grado GR10, Whetstone 4R and last but not least Senn HD800
So I became interested in these IM04; because of High build quality, 4 speakers, great fit and comfort, and hopefully great sound, and good isolation for travel. All these attributes, particularly the fit, comfort, not falling out are drawbacks of all the IEM's I mentioned. So the IM04s win on those attributes, comfortable, secure, + isolation. Now the sound. So I just got these, and with me have the Grados, Bose and Ultrasone..a good range to compare. So without a lot of detail , my opinion is these sound great! the vocals are a bit forward, and slightly smoothed, very, very natural. I can listen to these most of the day, and not tire, and I love vocals.
I tested them with Algorhythm Solo -DB DAC and a Ray Samuels SR-71B amp, and straight up from the iPhone 5s. Initially I heard, you needed an AMP to drive these because of the 4th speaker, my opinion is you can but it's not necessary. Sound great from the iPhone 5S straight up. My main reason for writing the review; is because I had doubts. Other reviewers said the IM04 is darker, and more muted than the IM03 which has positive reviews, but I haven't tried. So when I first put these on with the medium silicone tips they ship with; I noticed a weak distant base, and not the sharpest mids and highs overall. They also ship with a set comply T500, medium tips. After hours of comparing and listening, I felt the IM04s didn't cut it.
