I know I could talk about the sound quality more but everyone else has done that...
Crap ear-pads that allow your ears to touch the grill
Crap jack that broke off in my computer
Crap wire quality
You might be thinking, "Sunny that's a load of crap. So why should I buy this?"
Simple answer is, you shouldn't... Unless you want an eargasm and if you have some basic ingenuity to make the headphones fantastic.
Here is what I did:
I installed this jack. It will require a rotary tool to cut away some of the headphone's plastic so it will fit.
When installing the jack be extremely careful with the wires that are already soldered in the headphone. The wire is incredibly fragile and will break like thread if pulled. But hey, if that does happen (like it did for me) you have 10 freakin feet of cable to pull wire from. Make sure you test the connection before you go putting it back together.
I also bought the Anker SoundLine 3.5mm AUX Audio Cable
I had some spare memory foam which I cut into into crescent shapes to so they would fit under the ear cushions. This effectively provided enough distance for my ears so they don't touch the grills. Cotton balls can also be used as a temporary solution.
All in all, I still love these headphones and use them every day.
Check out the pics so you can see what I'm blathering about.
The ad700x are open back headphones. Which simply means they do not isolate the sound into your ear. What the open back headphones do I have noticed is create this sense that the sound is coming from your entire room. It creates what they call a large sound stage which allows for sound to travel outward and freely vs focused into your ear ( I think thats what it does). You couple this with a nice external DAC/Amp and you have your self one of the best gaming headphones you can ever buy and at a bargain. The mids and highs sound clear and crisp allowing you to pinpoint where foot steps are coming from. If you listen to music than the sound feels like you are at a concert hall with just you and the band.
I have minor trivial gripes with this headset and that is its lack of bass. Because of the nature of the open back, bass essentially gets lost. Aesthetically, these headphones are not the sexiest on the market so if looks are your thing these are not the ones for you (refer to my lovely model Duncan the penguin photos. The microphone does not come included. I created my gaming headphones by simply buying an external microphone to attach to my headphones). Lastly if you game or listen to music in a room where there is noise or constant hustle and bustle than having any open back headphones is not ideal since those sounds will bleed into your experience.
When compared to a closed back headset like my astro a40's, the sound on he ad700x is substantially better. Again, I am speaking from a gamers perspective. If you are the type of person who enjoys good deep punchy base and feeling like the sound is enclosed and tight than closed back headphones are the way to go.
Overall this is an amazing pair of headphones. The large sound stage it creates will eliminate the need for surround sound. I place my settings on stereo across the board and because the sound stage is so large, surround sound is naturally created through its design.
