Choose Power Adapter Carefully - must have NEGATIVE center

So far, so good. I purchased this for emergency use and have only tested it once. I was pleased with the reception during my test. Please note that the ZJchao 3v 1A AC Adapter 5.5/2 1mm shown as "frequently purchased with" this radio will NOT work. The radio requires a NEGATIVE center and the adapter has a POSITIVE center. I discovered too late that the adapter is not eligible for return. I should have read the return policy on the adapter more closely. I am posting this in hopes of saving someone else the problem I encountered with the adapter.

This is one amazing radio for the size and price.First thing i noticed is its a rugged,well built radio.Everything is solid from switching thru the bands,volume and tuning knob,and actually has a little weight to it.The tuning know is very sturdy.Not alot of play in it but when you find a station you like it stays.Ive been a sw listener now for 27 years and have had several different radios from cheap 20.00 to 800.00 powerhouses.AM-FM and Shortwave come in loud and clear.Volume is no problem with this one.Am and Shortwave really pull the stations in.At night i get about 20 am stations in clear as well as shortwave.If you have been around am or shortwave daytime of course limits the stations but still get quite a few very clear.I dont listen to fm much but do get several stations in great even thou i live out in the middle of nowhere.For greater channels on shortwave just put it by a window or attatch a long wire to antenna.I am very pleased with tecsun.As far as i know it is one of the cheapest,but in no way is it "cheap".It is a radio i would recommend if your just starting out on shortwave.It will not disappoint.

Great Shortwave Radio For Someone On A Tight Budget

If you're on a tight budget, and need to keep in touch in the world, then this radio will help fit the bill. The radio has 12 bands on it which has the available SW broadcasts during a boring afternoon or evening, and also it has great AM reception during the daytime and at night. Also it does very well receiving local and semi local FM stations and sometimes distant depending on the conditions and where they are available. The SW bands come in well just as long you're away from computer noise and interference. It's a great budget world band portable radio that can be given to the beginning short wave listener who needs to learn his / her around the short wave bands and also to be able to explore what short wave radio is. It takes 2 AA batteries and it does require a small AC/DC adapter (not available), and it does require a long wire antenna for better indoor reception such as a simple 23 foot short wave wire antenna. It has a tuning light feature to tell if you have a good signal available. There are other reviews about this affordable radio on You Tube so go check those out as well. Not bad for a radio that picks up the world for less than $30.

If you have done any research on shortwave radios, you certainly have seen glowing reports on this radio. Truth is, they are right!! This radio, while very inexpensive, beats many of the high dollar radios available today. If you are looking for something that fits in your pocket yet draws in many of the worlds SW stations, as well as AM and FM, this radio is the perfect place to start. I have been enjoying listening to stations from all over the world, and so will you. I may purchase more as gifts, they are that good.

AM/FM reception is adequate and SW is pretty darn good in the evenings with this very inexpensive radio. Don't sell your Tecsun PL-660 or 880 or your Sony 7600 just grab one of these and you'll be surprised. For a radio this inexpensive there is no need to make a fuss about what it doesn't have or what Tecsun should have done and so on. This is a fun little rig that works fine. It joins my Kaito WRX911, and my VITE VT-111 as being just as much fun as my old crystal radio set.

A really nice little radio!
It pulls in the out-of-town AM stations at night which is what I wanted.
Although that feature seems to work better in winter than summer - summer I get a lot of static on the lower end of the dial below about 800.
One little problem developed though - after about six months - the volume knob started acting up.
It's not precise anymore. Example: You turn it a little and the volume shoots up loud. (This is why I only gave it 3 stars overall).
I can live with it - again - for what I paid for it.
I've gone through a number of these little radios and this one is best so far.

For the price it's a great little radio. I wouldn't really consider it for everyday use as much as a nice little emergency radio for when the power goes out or to keep in a bug out bag. Might even be great for hiking or camping due to it being small and light weight.
For the size it can get pretty loud and with ear buds comfortable to listen too with the volume turned fairly low. So far I only used it in my apt. where reception generally sucks. I picked up far more stations on FM and a few more on AM than I have gotten here with any other radio. Couldn't pick up anything on SW midday CA time, but again indoors where reception is bad anyway.
I've seen people say it has great reception while holding it and loses the station when set down. I did experience this on some stations, but as I said it is not something I'd consider an everyday radio. Other's might depending on their needs.
All in all after researching here and other sites I found this to be the best buy in it's price range and I am very happy with my choice. If looking for a decent little radio just to have on hand if needed this is worth the cost.

The first thing that I noticed is that it has the sound and the feel of a more expensive radio. I bought this radio because I wanted a small bare bones analog shortwave that would have a long aa battery life. The only extra’s this radio has is an external power port and a tuning indicator light which is actually helpful for not passing over stations because the frequencies are quite close on this little radio. It also has a tuning knob rather than a thumb wheel which is far more comfortable to use. I have had this radio for a few days now and it performs very well on am, fm and shortwave. It is hard to imagine that you could find a better new shortwave radio for $20.

No longwave AM radio - but great reception

Buyer beware - as well as shortwave, this indeed offers regular FM and AM listening - but the AM reception is medium-wave only, 525-1610 kHz. No long-wave AM, which for me here in Europe means no BBC Radio 4 on 198kHz while travelling!
This is surprising, since all far less capable radios offer it (eg. stock car stereos). A mild disappointment, but it's my own fault for not reading the product description more carefully.

The shortwave performance more than makes up for this, at completely the wrong hours of the day (ionosphere-wise) I can still get stations as far afield as sub-Saharan Africa, America, and China. A fantastic little product for the price and very compact - it's smaller than my Galaxy S5 screen, although obviously thicker.

Note that if you have horrid static noises on shortwave it's probably the radio pollution around you - particularly modern gadgets like WiFi and mains chargers. In my house with powerline networking plugs, I can't get anything indoors, but when I go into the garden all is crystal clear. Turning off all mains power at the trip switch suddenly brought blissful clarity! - An interesting test of how noisy our modern homes are radio-wise. If you have problems, don't blame the set, get away from electricity and technology for a bit.

Well, it came in a day ! I get the thing out of it's box and start playing with it. Really ! I have owned and borrowed Sony, Roberts and Grundig SW receivers and not one had the power of this. In seconds I had scanned Russian,Chinese,German,Japanese and American senders.Plus a fair smattering of morse senders.For the price a most spectacular bargain. I may well invest in another Tecsun soon as this one has performed beyond my expectations.

Not good, poorly made.

About half a year ago I bought a Tecsun R-9012 World Receiver after getting interested in listening to shortwave radio. I have had a lot of time to find all the good and bad points to this receiver so thought I’d write a review of it!

The look and feel of the device:
The Tecsun R-9012 has a “typical” modern portable radio aesthetic with an analogue multi-band tuner window, a protruding tuner knob on the right, kickstand on the back and a hand strap on the left. The radio feels quite cheap but sturdy. The slider switch is not nice to use (Keep reading for why) and the tuning knob feels really nasty. There is a red LED to indicate how strong a station’s signal is. The kickstand at the back is very easy to break which seems to be an issue with the cheaper portables. Overall a standard look and cheap feel which you would expect at the price point the Tecsun is sold at.

Sound:
The internal speaker is not bad considering the price point and is listenable to for hours however there is much much better out there and I like to, when possible, plug in an external speaker.

FM Performance:
The R-9012 has appalling FM performance. Think a cheap £1 FM radio from ebay level of bad. Tuning the R-9012 is not hard … unless the station is not stupidly strong. I live in an area of amazing FM coverage (250kW BBC transmitter at about 30km or so distance) and it picks up all the BBC 250kW stations easily but it struggles with local BBC and most commercial stations (Heart, Capital etc..). Aerial length, positioning and black magic seem to affect the signal heavily! Also, you get a lot of “ghost” signals (Strong signals appearing over and over again where they are not due to over gaining the receiver). And don’t get me started about its performance once headphones are plugged in …. It struggles on the main BBC stations with headphones!

MW Performance:
Not bad; Unnecessarily hard to tune in comparison to some other receivers but the actual performance is good. Jil FM on 531 & 549KHz works fine in the evenings and BBC Radio 5 Live and Smooth Radio tune just as good as a car / sony boombox / other receivers I’ve tested. Again the signal starts to deteriorate when you plug in headphones.

SW Performance:
This is what I bought this radio for .. So, is it any good at SW stations? Not really. It’s HELL to tune and I’m not exaggerating. Let me list everything I dislike about this radio’s SW:
The numbers written on the readout seem to be a little out so you have no idea where you are in the bands and tuning is hit or miss if you want to go to a particular frequency.
The tuning knob is horrible, slips a little from time to time and it can UN-TUNE after as little as 10 MINUTES!!!
The band selector switch …. Not the band selector switch. It’s so bad. After you’ve selected a band you can stroke the switch left or right AND IT AFFECTS THE SIGNAL STRENGTH, this has worsened over time to the point I have to use something to push into it just to stop the signal massively degrading.
It’s not as sensitive as a Tivdio VT-111 which is the same price if not cheaper.

So, do I still want a Tecsun PL-660 or something? Yes
Do I recommend this Tecsun R-9012? No, for this price get a Tivdio VT-111 or spend a bit more on a fancier Tecsun. I’d give this one a miss!!

This is all my opinion on my own unit I purchased with my own money from Amazon. Nothing has influenced this review aside from my use of the equipment.

Great Little Radio !

A very good radio, just as sensitive as my PL-660 but I love the analogue tuning dial, it makes seeking stations so much faster. I wish they made a lot more radios with Analogue dials. My only criticism is that some of the bands end too early, for instance the 41 meter band ends at 7.35 Mhz, it should go to about 7.45 and at that there are some stations that broadcast outside of this.

I don't find it difficult to tune and stations can be close together but I don't find it an issue.

I have about 20 feet of wire flung up into a tree and in the window and attached to the telescopic antenna and the radio really comes alive during the day time, it can over load it a little at night when shortwave itself is best.

MW performance is very good compared to my PL-660 which is deaf on MW. I have a Tecsun AN-200 loop which really makes MW stations appear out of nowhere during the day time.

Sound quality is ok for speech but screechy sounding for music but as you'd expect for such a small radio and tiny speaker.

Overall a good radio, well built and good performance, get a portable shortwave long wire antenna and connect one end outside as high as possible and it really makes a difference to any SW radio.
