TED ALAN WORTH, whose memoirs became Virgil Fox (The Dish), played solo recitals and concerts with orchestras throughout Europe and North America. Often described as Virgil Fox's most celebrated pupil, his recording career began by assisting Fox in many of his legendary sessions. Worth's own discs are treasured mementos of a style of organ playing that appears-at most-once in a generation. This just discovered recording, on a 1963 Aeolian-Skinner Organ of 113-ranks, beautifully supports the review he received from Alfred Frankenstein in the San Francisco Chronicle: "The organ, in his hands, seemed as plastic an instrument as any the player holds under his chin or warms with the breath of his body." This recording, and his memoirs, are his public legacy.

Sad to say, Ted did not record for any major record company; rather, his recordings on small private companies which featured a Rodgers organ were available after his recitals. Therefore, there are very few recordings of Ted on actual pipe organs. This 1965 "live" recital is one of those rare exceptions which was recorded on the fine 4-113 AEolian-Skinner located in the Memorial Chapel, Louiseville, Kentucky, at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Ted Alan Worth was certainly a color artist with the organ. Variety in stop changes and combined with a theatrical flair for the dramatic are characteristics of these compositions. He was a very talented musician who always tried to make organ recital exciting. He had excellent manual and pedal technique which shows in these recordings. Memorized recitals like his teacher Virgil Fox were a must and this added to the excitement of their respective recitals. The Handel and the de Maleingreau were "trademark" compositions for Mr. Worth. Transcriptions were also included in his programs and were played with heart and soul. This is a must for anyone who attended any of his recitals. Professionally recorded, the AEolian-Skinner organ is an excellent example of the tonal work of the company during Joseph Whiteford's tenure as tonal director. The humorous Purvis piece was from the pen of Ted's first teacher at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. The charming Hebble composition is from his friend of long standing who is still alive as of this review. Highly recommended as a memento for those individuals who saw, heard and knew Ted Alan Worth.
