Fancy Goldfish get huge and can live beyond 10 years, they need a minimum of 30 gallons for a single fish (growing to the size of the bowl is a myth). Regular Goldfish and Comet Tails are best suited as pond fish, they simply become too large for most indoor aquariums.
Bettas should have at least 5 gallons and a heater and can live for many years in those conditions. In this thing, they'll likely die in a matter of weeks.
This product does not meet the needs of the fish they imply they are for and will most assuredly cause early death due to disease caused from the stress of living in these awful conditions.
Teaching a child that a pet is a toy is abhorrent and can never end well for the pet. Please consider buying your child a digital pet instead, unless you are committed to providing the right care for any animal through proper research.
Any well-informed aquatic specialist will tell you that a betta needs at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a heater & filter in order to thrive, and tanks that are even bigger are even more preferable. Betta fish like to swim around as much as any other aquarium fish. Bigger is ALWAYS better for all fish.
All aquarium tanks need to have a 0 ammonia level for your fish to be healthy. Given the size of this tank, you will need to do a 100% water change almost every day to achieve this. Elevated ammonia levels can cause serious health problems for a betta fish, and can kill them immediately or make them experience a slow and agonizing death. Frequent water changes also stress out a fish, which can also create health problems. When run properly, larger tanks actually require less maintenance than a tank this size.
Keeping a fish in this size of a tank is the equivalent of keeping a dog or cat in a cage all the time, instead of letting them roam around your house or yard. And it's been my personal experience that a betta fish is just as active as all other fish in the right kind of environment and enjoy being able to swim around. They need their water to be warm and become lethargic if the temperature is too cold.
In addition, this tank will probably be moved around a lot or even mishandled. That will stress the fish out, or even injure him.
There is a high likelihood that a betta fish will die or become sick if kept in this sort of an environment. Personally, I would think that this would really upset a child if that were to happen. If you invest in a larger tank with a heater and filter, you can provide years of enjoyment for your child. I suggest that people read the book Betta Your Healthy Happy Pet by John Tullock in if they want to learn more about why this isn't a good tank for a betta. It has information about proper housing and care for these fish. It's available on Amazon.
I do have good news, though. You can buy 5 gallon tanks for not much more than the price of this "toy" (living animals are not toys) and keep your animal safe and happy.
