Editorial Reviews

Review

"The greatest book of poetry ever written." -Melissa Lion, BookSlut

"Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz is my kind of writer: a bawdy, brilliant, hilarious harlot. Hot Teen Slut is not only a great title to mention at parties, but an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable read."
--Maggie Estep, author of Diary of an Emotional Idiot

"The poetry world has never met a more brilliant spy in the house of porn. This stuff is funny, dirty, honest, and packed tight with a beautiful, artistic energy. I absolutely loved this book."
--Beth Lisick, author of Everybody Into the Pool

Aptowicz poetry is direct, emotive, and sometimes hilarious. I most definitely performance poetry though and loses some punch on the page. Elements of the use of pornography are innovative, but some are basically fairly puerile jokes. The memoir-in-verse element does read particularly dry in the beginning in a way that is distractingly prosaic at first. As one becomes more invested, Aptowicz actually does more with the forms as well as becomes more poignant. Ultimately, it is an uneven book but the mixture of humor and humanity was charming enough to keep me engaged.

Note: I'm waaaay tired. And a little bit drunk on cheesecake. That said: I really like this book. Cristin is always poignant, honest, and funny. You can expect that in any of her books, but what I adore about this book specifically is:

1) You have to love a virgin working in the porn industry.

2) The juxtaposition of the rawness of porn against budding young love.

3) Poems are often narrative, but rarely do you get an entire book that paints such a lovely picture of this relatable and fragile time in one's life: right out of college, full of hope, full of terror, full of real-world-kicking-you-in-the-faceness.

4) So, um, I think the line from the poem is, "I could make money off those tits . . ." or something like that. The heart of that poem: that the most popular porn is that of the most normal, ordinary, and extraordinary people has stuck with me long, long after reading it. Porn can be a very ugly, ugly business, and Cristin's ability to find the humane and the beautiful within it is . . . well, it's what she does.

Read it in public. It'll make your nipples hard.

This book now sits atop my favorite books of poetry. Admittedly I haven't read an abundance of books on poetry but I have a feeling this will sit up here for a while. This book kept me thoroughly entertained, the subject matter was unique (Cristin working as a copywriter in the porn industry) and Cristin's take on everything was excellent. I particularly enjoyed seeing her transpose her workings onto some traditional poetry forms; I had studied them in college but had not seen any new or refreshing takes on them until here. It is raunchy, it is hilarious, but what takes it beyond that is its heart and introspection. Heartily recommended.
