The Good:

For those of us who never purchased the original release, then this cd will be a true treat. This is the first Katy Perry cd I have bought. With this Definitive 18 track collection, you are getting 7 additional tracks including remixes of "ET" and "Last Friday Night" along with an acoustic version of "the One that Got away." Even better than that is the inclusion of three new songs. "Wide Awake" and "Dressin' Up" (these two could easily become future singles) along with her current seventh #1 track the powerful balled, "Part of Me."

This album will now enter Music history as having the most singles and number one tracks by any artist (Male or female) from a single album. It is almost like a Greatest hits compilation.

THE BAD:

I can understand die-hard fans being upset at now having to buy the album twice for really three new tracks. I too do not like record-companies gouging people with many different versions of the same cd. If you already have Teenage Dream then just download the three singles and add them to your Katy Perry collection.

Maybe what the record executives should have done was include a bonus DVD with the 7 videos alongside this release to make this worth the full price.

Now that I've listened to all of Katy Perry's albums (through Prism as of the time of writing of the review), I'd have to say that this one is definitely my favorite of all of them. This one seems to contain the highest proportion of excellent songs, and it's definitely the one that I listen to the most. Here's a rundown of the individual songs (which I am keeping brief since this album is so long):

Teenage Dream (5/5) – This is a nice opener. It's kind of an anthem to teenage experiences, and it feels strangely nostalgic to me despite the fact that it's not nearly old enough to actually be nostalgic. It's a weird effect, but I like it.

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) (4/5) – This is a nice, carefree (and rather hyperbolic) song about partying. I like it.

California Girls (5/5) – This could be thought of a party song, even though it isn't explicitly about parties. Either way, I like its light tone and catchy chorus. The guest verse from Snoop Dog is nice, too.

Firework (4/5) – I'm not sure this works well as a "motivational" song due to the slightly weak lyrics, but I still like the sound of it, and it's pleasant enough to listen to.

Peacock (5/5) – I know a lot of people find this song to be stupid, but I like it solely because I find it amusing. It doesn't hurt that it's darn catchy, too.

Circle the Drain (5/5) – This is an interesting change of tone from the previous album's songs, since this song is much darker, exploring drug addiction. Despite the heavy tone, it still manages to be high energy in its delivery!

The One That Got Away (5/5) – This is a bit more of a wistful, regretful song, and it manages to explore its topic without being overly whiny.
E.T. (5/5) – I love this song!

I'm sorry, but I like a lot of Katy's music. She is more rock than pop and I would have bought this for "Wide Awake" than anything else. I don't care if she gets criticized for sexual innuendo, at least she doesn't throw it in your face like other female singers of this time. "Wide Awake" verges on psychedelia and I like that. And lets face it, bottom lie, the girl is drop dead gorgeous.

For a very long time I could not stand Ms. Perry. To some extent that still holds. Originally when I bought the album (for >$1, and even then I thought I was spending too much) I only liked Teenage Dream and Firework sort of. Luckily, after much gritting of teeth and forcing my mind to stay open, I ended up kind of liking it enough to say it was worth my $1 (and maybe more).

Serious guilty pleasures for me are CALIFORNIA GIRLS and LAST FRIDAY NIGHT aka I will openly say I hate these songs. Both feelings are true. When both came out and played every other song on the radio, I wanted to kill her for making such annoying songs that were way to catchy. Still I can only listen to them once in a blue moon or the irritation sets in. The remix with Missy Elliot of LAST FRIDAY NIGHT is far better, cuz Missy Elliot is da bomb.

Teenage Dream and Humingbird Heartbeat are my two favorites on the CD. They kind of have the same premise, but both have a nostalgic sound behind the lyrics as well as at face value. I really love Hummingbird Heartbeat because it reminds me of the music that was on the radio when I was growing up. Though, I am not a fan of the first line "you make me feel like i'm losing my virginity." In this way and many others I am worried that Katy is going in the direction of Rihanna with TALK THAT TALK. SEX, SeX and more sex. I'm not sure either one of them is even more tasteful. This also shows me how Katy Perry struggles with a good metaphor at times. Firework is a nice feel good song, and I especially like the video. Seriously though, who in their right mind feels like a plastic bag (this line almost ruins the entire song for me)?!

Despite being a little heavy in sexual expression, I do like DRESSING UP.
