I’ve become quite cynical about the state of modern hardcore over the past decade or so, as too many modern influences have resulted in too many changes to the basic construct of this form of musical expression that I hold so dear to my heart. Enter a young 5-piece band from Glasgow, Scotland, called Departures and their latest album, ‘Teenage Haze’. Cutting right to the chase, this is hardcore. Every groove of this record is soaked with passion, energy, and an almost-dizzying sense of melody. My easy-way-out manner of describing their sound is this: imagine a perfect blend of mid-80s Washington DC hardcore and late-90s San Diego hardcore. ‘Really?’, you’re saying to yourself, ‘Can that possibly be true?!’. Uh… yes. ‘Teenage Haze’ is a stunning record through and through. I cannot recommend it highly enough to old-school and to new-school hardcore fans alike, and there’s no way I’m going to put this record away and forget about it… ever.
