Review
"...a satisfying tale and a worthy companion piece to the original comics." —Publishers Weekly
"One of the most anticipated comics of the year, and the colorful yet dark dystopian story definitely delivers." —Den of Geek, voted by writers and readers as one of the Best Comics of 2021
"Point blank reaction: I enjoyed the hell out of this book. The Last Ronin is an absolute blast." —Graphic Policy
"For TMNT fans this has been a long time coming to see Laird and Eastman back together again. They have surrounded themselves with an all-star team that shares their passion for TMNT storytelling and the end product is nothing short of amazing. Frank Miller has The Dark Knight Returns and now Laird, Eastman, and Waltz have The Last Ronin." —Comic Watch
"What's great about this story is that it truly stands alone. In truth, if you've watched the original live-action TMNT movie, you have all you need to truly appreciate this comic book. And if you've been reading the comic books, watching the television shows and films, and played the games? This story will take you on an emotional rollercoaster." —Newsarama
"It's TMNT by way of The Dark Knight Returns, down to the gritty internal monologues and vaguely cyberpunk aesthetic." —ComicBook.com
"A must-read for both new and old TMNT fans." —Monkeys Fighting Robots
"This book is awesome, if you’re a fan of the TMNT you probably already have this on your pull list, and you won’t regret it! If you’re still not aboard the cowabunga train, I still say pick it up, this story has such an emotional core and deserves to be read." —Comics: The Gathering
"This just might be the best Ninja Turtles comic ever created." —Comics Bulletin
"Terrific visuals, fluid panels, and a cast of interesting characters, highlighted by a terrifying background. It does not waste any time. Dives in on the action." —Comic Crusaders
"Any TMNT fan can pick this up and enjoy." —Word Of The Nerd
"Despite the fact that this is solidly set in the future of the current run of IDW comics, you dont need to have read a single issue to understand The Last Ronin. Frankly, any fan of the recent Old Person ___ comics need to check out this comic, as does any Turtle fan." —You Don't Read Comics
"A dream come true for Ninja Turtles fans. It feels like the culmination of the original run of the series, and then some. Absolutely a must-read for anyone who loves these characters and their world." —AIPT
"This is what a sweeping epic is and should be plain and simple. It’s beautifully written with striking characterisation and bloody stunning interiors and it is without a doubt one of the most poignant and profound reads on stands right now." —Reading With A Flight Ring

The war between the Oroku/Foot and Hamato Clans has spanned generations. Now the last surviving member of the Hamato family had come gor revenge on the lady Oroku and his army. It has been 16 years since the Hamato's were decimated. Making the last survivor a Ronin. What happened to his family? Where has he been? Can he do it alone?
On a personal not this has always been my faverite Turtle, so I was extra glad he got the spotlight. Though the others also have their moments in the flashbacks. This is has become my all time faverite Turtles story. There are different artists and artwork on display for different parts of the story and they are blended together perfectly.
The book starts the a great introduction by Robert Rodriguez, finishes with an awesome afterwards original creater Kevin Eastman, and a full page cover gallery with varient covers. Which era of TMNT fan you are this is must have. I think every character was done justice. I am a happy fan.
First the positives:
The Art - I loved the art in this book and the stylistic choices made for the flashbacks felt appropriate and mixed things up nicely, keeping the experience visually fresh and engaging throughout.
The Legacy Characters - I think the original legacy characters are mostly served well and I enjoyed their interactions.
The Story - The setup and premise for this story is fantastic. This is why I suspect it has caught the type of positive hype surrounding it. I love the decisions made and setting of the world we are introduced to in 'The Last Ronin'. The premise and setup is what is drawing the comparisons to the likes of 'The Dark Knight Returns' but people shouldn't compare the two because they are a gulf apart in their actual quality. Which brings me to...
The Negatives:
The Execution - The writing never lives up to its great premise. The story suffers from a weak villain and predictable finale that's telegraphed throughout, making the experience wholly unsatisfying. It didn't feel as earned or resonate as much as much as it should.
'The Dark Knight Returns' had multiple great antagonists for Batman to run a gauntlet through from Harvey Dent, the Mutant Leader, the Joker and finally a breathtakingly epic showdown with Superman that has shocked and surprised readers for generations. 'The Last Ronin' has a thin link between its villains and protagonists and tepid sense of jeopardy throughout. We know what will happen in the story but we are never given a real reason to hope for anything else.
The New Characters - Like many new franchises the story tries to pass the torch to new characters that I assume will carry the story forward with their own adventures afterwards. And like nearly every franchise that has tried the same thing, I simply have no desire to see it, as the characters just are not that interesting.
Conclusion: 'The Last Ronin' is worth checking out for comic fans that enjoy nice art and casuals that occasionally like to add a nice looking book to their shelves. But it's not a quality of work that is transient, nor will it convert or bring new people to comics. It feels more like a solid pitch for a film or streaming series to come, rather than a complete work told passionately within the medium that gave these characters their birth. The film 'Logan' was a superior take on its premise than its comic counterpart. Maybe someday we will get similar treatment for 'The Last Ronin' in a live action adaptation.
On inspecting the second one I noticed all the pages are wavey/bumpy, so I checked the first one again (as I hadn’t took it post office yet) and it also had wavey pages but not as bad. I noticed the red paper they use for the binder of the back page hadn’t stuck in places that has made it pumpy which explains why it’s more wavey than the first book I received.
But as both was wavey regardless it’s got me thinking they are all possibly going to be like that and is it worth me trying for a better 3rd one?
It’s a shame as the story seems good but they bumps on the pages can be very distracting when reading.

Anyway the comic hardback book, otherwise seems of good quality. The artwork is definitely levels above the various iterations of The Turtles animations that I’ve seen, the colouring really pops.
I’ve only scanned a few pages, however the dialogue so far is a little stunted & clichéd, hopefully this less of an issue or is remedied as the story starts to unfold

A beautiful, saddening, heart-pounding story that resonates a true love of the material and characters.
An excellent book for any discerning comic reader but an absolute must for anyone who has cried out "Cowabunga!"
