Review

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is a love letter to the roots of the franchise. Whether you've been a shell head since day one or a newer fan following IDW's ongoing series, The Last Ronin hardcover deserves a spot in your comic collection." —CBR

"...a satisfying tale and a worthy companion piece to the original comics." —
Publishers Weekly

"One of the most anticipated comics of the year, and the colorful yet dark dystopian story definitely delivers."
—Den of Geek, voted by writers and readers as one of the Best Comics of 2021

"Point blank reaction: I enjoyed the hell out of this book.
The Last Ronin is an absolute blast." —Graphic Policy

"For TMNT fans this has been a long time coming to see Laird and Eastman back together again. They have surrounded themselves with an all-star team that shares their passion for TMNT storytelling and the end product is nothing short of amazing. Frank Miller has The Dark Knight Returns and now Laird, Eastman, and Waltz have The Last Ronin." —Comic Watch

"What's great about this story is that it truly stands alone. In truth, if you've watched the original live-action TMNT movie, you have all you need to truly appreciate this comic book. And if you've been reading the comic books, watching the television shows and films, and played the games? This story will take you on an emotional rollercoaster." —Newsarama

"It's
TMNT by way of The Dark Knight Returns, down to the gritty internal monologues and vaguely cyberpunk aesthetic." —ComicBook.com

"A must-read for both new and old TMNT fans." —Monkeys Fighting Robots

"This book is awesome, if you’re a fan of the TMNT you probably already have this on your pull list, and you won’t regret it! If you’re still not aboard the cowabunga train, I still say pick it up, this story has such an emotional core and deserves to be read." —Comics: The Gathering

"This just might be the best Ninja Turtles comic ever created." —Comics Bulletin

"Terrific visuals, fluid panels, and a cast of interesting characters, highlighted by a terrifying background. It does not waste any time. Dives in on the action." —Comic Crusaders

"Any TMNT fan can pick this up and enjoy." —Word Of The Nerd

"Despite the fact that this is solidly set in the future of the current run of IDW comics, you dont need to have read a single issue to understand The Last Ronin. Frankly, any fan of the recent Old Person ___ comics need to check out this comic, as does any Turtle fan." —You Don't Read Comics

"A dream come true for Ninja Turtles fans. It feels like the culmination of the original run of the series, and then some. Absolutely a must-read for anyone who loves these characters and their world." —AIPT

"This is what a sweeping epic is and should be plain and simple.  It’s beautifully written with striking characterisation and bloody stunning interiors and it is without a doubt one of the most poignant and profound reads on stands right now." —Reading With A Flight Ring

3.0 out of 5 stars A lackluster story.
By Jesse on August 13, 2022
It's hard to say anything negative about TMNT. But I will. There are so many variables to which Ronin would appeal to people but it could have and should have been better. It does tend to drabble on at times and it stops short of really living it's full potential. This is simply because it lacks the a strong villain. You won't find the Shredder in this book but a very watered down and boring grandson of said Shredder. Had I known this I would have never purchased the book. I mean you have an aged and matured turtle but there isn't a proper book end. The villain grandson stays hidden in a tower of technology in a boring setting relying on his henchmen. The story is predictable and at times..a bit cheesey. You get tastes of darkness but it's just not fully embracing it. The upside is the artwork is well done and you get a throw back to the style used in the origin run of the title. You do get a Baxter Stockman but this villain also hides in a fortress of technology in an apocalyptic New York. You get an April O Neil but the story dwells more on her daughter and the rushed relationship that is formed between her and the surviving turtle. Ronin has the greatest set up imaginable for TMNT but fails in its execution. It finds ways to extend the lives of major characters but somehow cannot extend that plot armor to the Darth Vader of the TMNT universe. It has managed to sail on hype and hope and has the story focuses on the younger generation of characters which is just completely boring in my opinion. The ending feels pack luster because the story reminds you from the beginning that this is a suicide run. So when it finally happens...you really have nothing but a "meh" moment. Nothing against the writers but this book lacked drama and substance. This is a fictional world of warriors and technology with what could have had a major ghost story element to it. The Ronin is suppose to be a gunslinger ninja tale and it just never built that foundation for my liking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story but wavey/bumpy pages
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2022
The first one to arrive came with a damaged spine so returning it.
On inspecting the second one I noticed all the pages are wavey/bumpy, so I checked the first one again (as I hadn’t took it post office yet) and it also had wavey pages but not as bad. I noticed the red paper they use for the binder of the back page hadn’t stuck in places that has made it pumpy which explains why it’s more wavey than the first book I received.
But as both was wavey regardless it’s got me thinking they are all possibly going to be like that and is it worth me trying for a better 3rd one?
It’s a shame as the story seems good but they bumps on the pages can be very distracting when reading.

Initially very excited when delivery came through, this was tarnished a little, when on inspection saw there was damage to the book after boxing.

Anyway the comic hardback book, otherwise seems of good quality. The artwork is definitely levels above the various iterations of The Turtles animations that I’ve seen, the colouring really pops.
I’ve only scanned a few pages, however the dialogue so far is a little stunted & clichéd, hopefully this less of an issue or is remedied as the story starts to unfold
