This is a very good presentation of the original Mirage Studios TMNT comic by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The book was originally published in black and white but I prefer it in color because I feel that it adds character and charm. This is because the color seems to add some extra life to what usually seems pretty sick for sure but also kind of bland. It is also presented here in extra large print which is even better, especially for fans like me who have vision problems and need glasses. The first volume collects the first seven issues and Raph's one shot where he meets with Casey Jones for the first time, all assembled here in glorious, eye popping full color. I also like how the front and back covers are made to look like a pizza box and the table of contents is made to look like a pizzeria menu, it's both funny and appetizing at the same time, although oddly enough, these turtles were not obsessed with pizza. The only draw back to the extra large print size is that it increases the size of the book itself. The dimensions are roughly 12 1/4" high x 9 1/4" wide x 1 1/8" thick so be sure to make some room in your book shelf, especially if you are planning to collect all five volumes (volume 4 is due out this Christmas Eve). Over all I highly recommend this for all hard core adult TMNT fans like myself who fondly remember the turtles' awesome past, just be wary of these books' size.

In addition 12/26/15: I also meant to mention how some folks may notice that a big chunk of issues are missing from the later volumes of this set.

My husband had the comic books when he was younger but they were destroyed by some water damage in the basement. When he received this from the kids for Father's Day he was like a kid on Christmas. He is very happy with it.

I was trying to decide if I wanted to get this colorized version, or the classic B&W Ultimate version. The Ultimate version has a better cover, but after having a chance to flip through that version, and compare it to this one, I find the colorization to be a great improvement to the stories. Well done and a great way to experience the original TMNT storyline.

Have you ever opened a book and a page is stuck together? Well now imagine the pages being stuck together because of shoddy production quality and that would be this book. When I first opened this book the first couple pages were stuck together because the trimmer did not finish trimming the edges. This almost caused me to tear a page. I am in total disappointment because every volume of the ultimate collection has came out excellent so far.

This book is essentially Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection Volume 1 but in beautiful color. I mainly bought this book to check out the classic B&W Turtles comics in color and must say the coloring job is impressive and totally worth the 30 or so bucks.

I take away 2 stars because of the pages being stuck together by shoddy trim job.

Update 7/6/13

I ordered another copy to do this review some justice, and the copy I received could not be more excellent. All the pages are crisp and clean and there are no defects in the hardcover whatsoever. I will be saving this for my young Turtles fans in the house. Thank You IDW and Kevin Eastman for being so awesome.

This is a great collection for a great value! I had most of these stories as a kid in the Mirage colored graphic novels and one of the major changes is some of the coloring. Shredder is in a blueish purple color and I could swear that he was in red in my old graphic novels. Don't get me wrong I like the coloring and these stories are so much fun. This is a tall volume and I had to rearrange my book shelf just to get it to fit alongside my Marvel Omnibus'. This is one of those things that you don't really know how awesome it is until you sit down to read it. To me these stories are just as important as the origins of Spider-Man, Captain America, and the Hulk. The large pages with larger pictures gives one the chance to enjoy the artwork and for fans of the original stories its a chance to catch something you may have missed in the smaller format.

This book caters specifically to those who want to read the old stories in color. The coloring is good throughout the book even if the first issue is notably better colored (and drawn) than the rest. The stories are good too with the exception of the unnecessary and dull third issue. My only bigger complaint is that there are no authors' comments in the book; as far as I know, these are only available in the Ultimate Collection series, and thus leaving them out is a rather cheap way to try to get people to buy those too.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Works Volume 1 was a great compilation of the first seven issues and the raphael one issue micro series " me myself and i which introduced a big character . i would give this book a 9/10 because it felt short but what makes me give it a 9 is that it has a great story introduces new fans to the tmnt universe and is a great add on to the old fans plus its in full new color and if you like this get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Works Volume 2 .
