Review
"[A] valuable resource to which parents will refer even as their teens enter adulthood; highly recommended for all public libraries." --Library Journal December 2006
This latest book by Chris Dendy is like the first edition, Teenagers with ADD, A Parents' Guide (1995), written as a one-stop source of information. It is clearly directed at families but contains nuggets of information that are helpful to anybody who works or lives with a teen diagnosed with an attention deficit. --Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy, Volume 74, No. 5, December 2007

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2013I have four children. When my youngest's grades continued to drop in highschool, we were baffled. When my motivated, "gifted" teen complained he "just couldn't focus", lost things continually, and took forever to do homework, we started researching ADD. I began with the internet, then checked out several books from the local library. This book was a God-send. Of all the resources I consulted, this was, by far, the most comprehensive and helpful. This was the one I ordered a copy of to keep on hand.
This book contains an excellent mix of scientific research, expert advice, and real-life anecdotes. It dispelled our misconceptions about ADHD-inattentive, helped us recognize the tell-tale behaviors, and helped us give our physician specific, objective observations to support diagnosis. The sections on what goes on (and doesn't) in the ADD brain, medication types and strategies, helping your child overcome executive-function deficits, identifying your child's strengths (often overlooked in the chore and homework battles), working with schools, and tips to help your older child get organized while respecting his dignity were all excellent.
Most importantly, this book has a positive, up-beat tone. It really helped us focus on what our child does RIGHT, confirmed my belief that he isn't just lazy or irresponsible, showed us that this is a disability for which there is help, and helped us find ways to assist him. I network discreetly with several moms who have similar concerns and feel very good about sharing this with them. One more benefit: sometimes, parents recognize their younger selves in this book and that can be very helpful, too. (It does tend to run in families and that connection is explored.)
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2008This book is essential for parents of a kid with ADHD. It's like an owner's manual for our kids! If I could have had a book like this in the early days of my son's diagnosis, I might not have made so many mistakes with him. It could easily replace 5 or 6 other books I've bought about kids with ADHD. The description of typical ADHD problems could have his name at the top - he OWNS all of them! The tips and tricks in this book are born of experience and they work - I can't say enough good things about Chris and her son. There is a particularly encouraging section at the end of the book, written by the former teens themselves, describing what they went through as teens and how they are doing now. They all sound so normal! Even happy and productive! This gives us perspectives on the tearing-out-my-hair days. Our kids are wonderful, even when they are at their worst. This book will give you comfort and courage to face the hard days. Get it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2015Ok book. there are others out there that summarize the information. This has allot of information to digest but is a good resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2011I can't begin to express how awesome this book is. My child is 14, recently diagnosed, and this book has been a priceless reference to me. Just about every question you can imagine is covered in a very comprehensive way. It is easy to understand and she backs what she says with the latest and greatest scientific research. This book has helped me to understand ADHD and how to deal with it in a very practical way and my son is doing great. The only suggestions I might make is: 1) update medications section to include vyvanse. 2) need a more comprehensive section on sibling relations (that is a major issue for many of us). 3) include a section on gifted children with ADHD. Still I highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2010As the mother of a teenager with ADD, this book was a real eye-opener. After years of seeing many behaviors in my adolescent/teenager that I thought seemed a bit odd, I read this book and realized that these behaviors added up to ADD. Did you know that a teenager with ADD often struggles with falling asleep and getting up in the morning? I'm not talking about the normal "night owl" thing - I'm talking about staying up until 4:30 AM on a school night - and not because s/he is doing homework!!! Heavenly days - no homework!! Did you know that a teenager with ADD can be very creative and think thru multiple details of something they are really interested in? - Have you ever tried to have your teenager dictate a research paper to you - and you do the typing? You can unleash their abilities in many different ways! I do agree that often times medication is necessary (it is with my teenager). This book will help parents understand the symptoms, common behaviors, along with helpful solutions to really help your teenager with ADD/ADHD reach their full potential! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2013My son was diagnosed with inattentive ADD last December, and he was 15 years old. He is still having hard time accepting the fact that he has ADD. I think he also has an opposition defiant disorder. I was pretty desperate to deal the situation and how to handle him. I found very much comfort when I read this book. I can realize that it is not my son's personality, it is his disorder. It has lots of references, explanations and experiences as parents with children with ADD/ADHD. It is encouraging and comforting. I would recommend this book to anybody who has the same struggles with their teens.

My son was diagnosed after many years struggling with behaviour at school. This book has been immensely useful and I have used extracts to inform school, myself and Jack.
It is a large book but very accessible and a constant source of reference by my bedside!

One of the best books on ADHD, no question. Some books on this controversial subject are one-sided and biased. This book focuses on the teenager with ADD/ADHD and has helped me no end.
