Our story

How we got our start

When Chris and Will Haughey started Tegu, they asked: “Could we create a for-profit company that would foster a positive social impact in Honduras through its business?” That was where it all began, and today, we’ve established our fully independent toy factory outside Tegucigalpa.

What makes our product unique

We like to say it’s a new twist on an old classic. We’ve carefully hidden magnets inside traditional wooden building blocks all while creating a visually beautiful toy—one that would fit well in your playroom, coffee table, or office desk.

Why we love what we do

Honduras is the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has one of the highest unemployment rates. We are in Honduras to change this story; we believe the power of job creation and awakening the joy of service will one day allow us to be the ‘employer of choice’ in the country and region.

No instruction manuals or electronics needed; just toys that demand imagination and inspire limitless creativity across all ages. Open-ended play is endangered, but we’re bringing it back.
The Original Sets are fully compatible with all other Tegu Magnetic Wooden Block Sets and are available in four colors: Tints, Jungle, Natural and Mahogany.


Tegu- 'TAY goo' Our name is derived from Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, where we manufacture Tegu blocks in our factory. Helping the nation of Honduras is a foundational priority of our company; you’ll find this in everything we do, starting with our name. We established our fully independent toy factory outside Tegucigalpa to make a statement: we’re in Honduras by choice and we’re here to stay.	Co- founders Chris and Will Haughey Returning from a business trip to Honduras in 2006, Chris Haughey, Tegu’s co-founder, left with more than a souvenir; he took home a vision to create a business to help transform a country. With a background in woodworking and an appreciation for the beautiful hardwoods of Honduras, Chris quickly found himself pursuing the startup of a wooden toy company. As he involved his brother Will and other talented friends in the venture, Tegu and its signature products were born, lighting a path for profit-driven business to have a transforming effect on the lives of Hondurans. Today, Tegu creates meaningful social impact in Honduras through employment and responsible business practices. These blocks are nice, and I would get them again if they were on sale, but the finish is not what I was hoping for. They are a bit rough to the touch, and I guess I thought they would be smoother. Other finishes might be more this way, so if I am able to see them in person I might get another set in a different style. Also, if you have more then one child this is hard to share, as there are a fair number of blocks, but not really enough for two kids to play with at the same time. So, for the large amount of $ you'd have to spend on these blocks you are almost better off going with another product like magna tiles where they give you 100 blocks at this same price point.

I first heard of Tegu because of their dedication to a socially-conscious business model. They are located in Honduras, a very poor country, but unlike many companies operating in developing countries Tegu offers all of its employees living wages and benefits. In other words, they are committed to finding efficiency without resorting to sweat labor.

Anyway, their toys cost a little more than you would otherwise expect as a result, but it doesn't matter. I purchased the largest set for my nephews about a month ago, and my sister out of nowhere mentioned they're still playing with the blocks constantly, seeing what odd arrangements they can make - or funny enough - using like sides of the magnets to repel each other. I can't wait to add to their collection, and I have to admit that after playing with my nephews I sort of want a small set for myself as well.

Me, I love this set of blocks. They are so beautiful and ingenious. How great is it that they are magnetic and so sturdily built! My preschooler loves to build with wood blocks, so I thought this was the perfect gift. But she has played with them maybe once this year. She still builds with wood blocks, but somehow she prefers the non-magnetic ones. I'm hoping she'll warm up to the Tegu, b/c they are so expensive! I think one of the problems is that there are so few of them.

He had a small kit at home and so they already knew the value of this wonderful toy, now they have enough to actually build something. As a matter of fact, that evening after the children had gone to bed the parents built several things and posted a picture on Facebook. Great toy for the whole family, I'd say.

My grandson loves this set of blocks. They are sturdy and tidy when put away. (They are anything but tidy when they are out - but I guess that is what we would want.) My daughter-in-law says they are saving quite a bit of money not buying tape because my grandson would tape his old blocks together.

This really is a great building set for children who are still developing fine motor control.

Took 2 stars- Why only one yellow block? Yes the picture only has one but isn't that a little weird?

Nothing wrong with the item but didn't wow me... For the price I shouldn't feel like this... Also ordered the carry case so hopefully that's not a disappointment. Kid is obsessed so I won't return... But it's Not worth the price

UPDATE**** Within an hour of writing this review my son comes to me with the Mother of all SPLINTERS. I wish I could give this zero stars. Getting my almost 200 back (bought the travel case also).
