The Telemann Edition is Brilliant Classics's newest addition to its Composer Edition/Portrait series. I had my doubt when Amazon recommended this to me as a pre-order item, since many of the new releases are revamped "Masterworks" series: Vivaldi, Handel, Mendelssohn, etc., all of them I had previously bought but eventually either sold or gave away. However, I decided to take the chance anyway. After all, what can I lose at such a price? As it turns out, the Telemann Edition is a good buy and has given me hours of listening pleasure. A keeper.

What's good about this box? It's good selections and mostly good performances at a great price. True, your Telemann collection won't be complete and your buying days won't be finished even if you buy this box. However, the selections are good and cover many facets of Telemann's works. (Well, I'd love to have at least one opera in the box, but I am not sure BC's tight budget would allow that.) Also true: there are only a handful of discs I could call truly outstanding.(*) However, most performances are from good to very good and are worth listening. Additionally there is an accompanying CD-Rom which includes the liner notes and the sung texts in the original German in the PDF format, which is a welcome and much-needed addition to BC's Masterworks series. Unfortunately, the translations are not offered, except for the Bass Cantatas (CD24), which was released individually earlier. If, like me, your German is not fluent, and you don't mind awkward English translations, the Google Translator will come in handy with quick cut-and-paste. (This is one place the PDF format is superior to the printed one.)

Some technical information: All but CD7 (Oboe Concerto) and CD9-16 (Overtures) are performed on period instruments.

I bought this when the planets had mysteriously aligned and the price was a mere $39.99 US (and with the Australian dollar buying $1.10 US recently, it was even better!). But the normal price was around twice that, but even if this seemingly one-time special is never to be repeated, this set is still worth it at $80 (which is just $2.75 per disc).

Of the 29 CDs in the set I purchased (I note 31 now listed? Brilliant are always re-jigging their products, it seems) I can safely say that it was only the "Concerto in E major for Flute, Oboe d'amore, Viola d'amore, Strings & basso continuo" on the "Concertos for Diverse Instruments" CD that I did not like. The viola d'amore in this recording almost sounds out of tune; the performers are the Wiener Akademie. It's so bad I can't stand to listen to it, but with only one work across 29 CDs not being to my liking, that's not bad, considering.

The 4 CDs of Tafelmusik are played by Musica Amphion and use period instruments. The performances are quite agreeable, though I prefer Reinhard Goebel's Musica Antiqua Köln for these works, but a change of pace to trick the ear every now and then doesn't go astray, and if you don't yet have Tafelmusik, then these will fill that void well.

The 8 CDs of overtures are excellent. They're not lush or rushed performances worthy of Reinhard Goebel, but are more intimate modern instrument recordings made between 2004 and 2008. They are worth the full price alone, in my view. The Passions-Oratorium spans two discs and is mainly a curiosity for me. It isn't a particularly memorable work. The remaining CDs make for easy listening and will round out your Telemann collection in one fell swoop.

I kept hearing a little bit of Telemann's works on the radio here and there - generally I like music from this period - and finally got around to looking for some to buy. Thought I would take the plunge with the complete works. Wow. Why did I wait? 27 hours of Telemann. Amazing. Even more amazing than I ever dreamed his works were.
The last three cds were mostly opera - and I've never cared for the operatic voice, so these three I kinda skipped over - just a personal preference, no reflection on the quality of the composition or performances.
I've only had chance to listen to the entire set once so far, but doubtless this work will be in my collection as long as I can hear.

Although I knew Telemann's music since long before, this is the first time I decided to have a collection of his music. And what a collection I've got! Every CD is a wonderful display of his genius. It is not easy to find such an extensive yet varied collection in one single set, let alone for that price. Absolutely recommendable.

I must admit, I had always thought of Telemann as kind of a second rate Baroque composer...how wrong I was! This is glorious music, full of beauty, intelligence and charm. The performances are passionate and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

What a fabulous weekend I have spent dipping into this Telemann box and the Brilliant CPE Bach box ( see my review). I have been smiling and dancing to this brilliant and varied music. Telemann straddles the baroque and the pre-classical and he also writes in many styles--Italian, French, German. Most of these performances are historically informed, but those on modern instruments are very convincing. If you love Baroque trumpets and oboes, there are many overtures, concerti, and chamber works for you, as well as some little know choral and vocal works, but the vast majority of the box is instrumental. So far I have not come across a clunker among the 29 beautifully performed disks. I already have many Telemann recordings, but I see very few duplications. Not all Brilliant boxes are of this high quality--a real treasure trove at bargain prices!
