This is one of only two complete recordings of Telemann's Paris Quartets available as a single set, and is much superior to the old Bruggen set. The Kuijkens are all very stylish and engaging performers, and they play these works very well.

Telemann wrote a lot of very good chamber music, but these quartets show him at his best. They are full of wonderful melodies, and some amazing rhythmic quirks. If Telemann had not been so prolific, these works would be considered absolute masterpieces on the order of the Brandenburg Concertos of Bach. They are that good.

This is by far the best recording of these Quartets. The Kujiken brothers are skilled players of their instruments -- a great achievement for self-taught musicians. Their version of these works of Telemann is fulfilled with virtuosity and panache, doing justice for the technically demanding scores. But there's more than just technique. You will find here real music. Don't miss this album!

Telemann's Paris works have been on my shortlist for a while so I grabbed the first set I found...it happened to be this one. Search over!

There are a number of ensembles that have recorded some or all of these works, and it's probably hard to go wrong with any of them. But the musical members of the Dutch Kuijken family, along with that baroque harpsichord doyen Gustav Leonhardt, make this set irresistible.

And (not to short-change Telemann), the music itself is wonderful...sprightly, inventive, varied and good humored. "Dessert music" as a natural follow-on to Telemann's better-known "Tafelmusick". You probably wouldn't want to play all of this in one sitting, any more than you'd want 3 large pieces of German chocolate cake all at once. But 3 CDs, 3 sessions...perfect.

Highly recommended.

This is an excellent recording, but the point of my review is this -- anyone interested in obtaining this disc should first take a look Sony's box set, which is a much better deal (spectacular, actually).

Gustav Leonhardt -The Edition [Box Set] is a collection of 15 discs, originally released by Sony or one of the Sony family companies, which have now been packaged together and released in a box, for a remarkably low price (at the present time).

The full Telemann Paris Quartets Nos 1-12 takes three discs, as listed here. The disc included with the Leonhardt box consists of Quartets Nos 1 through 6, and is identical to the track contents listed on this product page for the first disc of this more complete release.

I've reviewed the box set itself, so you can take a look at the link above to see the full listing of recordings included.
