About the Author
Anthony Smith worked as a producer at the BBC from 1960-1971 and was Director of the British Film Institute from 1979-1988. He has been President of Magdalen College, Oxford, since 1988.
Richard Paterson is Head of Media, Education, and Research at the British Film Institute in London.

After reviewing a number of alternatives, I selected this text for use in an intermediate course on the television and radio industries. This text filled an important niche in the course in its review of the current state of the television (and to a lesser extent radio) industries around the world. It is an edited collection that has a bit of redundancy and occasionally exhibits some biases. It remains that television is operated in very different ways in many countries around the world, and this text clearly describes those differences and the ways in which television is changing on a global basis.
