Did the US and UK governments lie about weapons of mass destruction to promote an attack on Iraq?

Did the media hold them to account or act as cheerleaders for war?

Tell me Lies reveals the systematic propaganda used by both the US and UK governments to convince us of the 'threat' from Iraq. It shows how we were deliberately misled into a war that has resulted in a humanitarian disaster in Iraq and threatens to create further instability and resentment of the US and UK throughout the Middle East.

Written by some of the world's leading journalists and commentators, it's a scathing indictment of the role of the mainstream media in legitimising government actions and undermining dissent. Critics, activists and journalists from both sides of the Atlantic explore alternatives such as the internet and Al Jazeera and provide analysis and guidance on resisting the media war.

Contributors include John Pilger, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Edward Herman, Mark Thomas, Mark Steel, Phillip Knightley, Tim Llewelyn (BBC Middle East Correspondent), Abdul Hadi Jiad (Iraqi journalist sacked by the BBC before the war), David Cromwell and David Edwards (Media Lens), Mark Curtis, John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton (PR Watch, and co-authors of Weapons of Mass Deception and Toxic Sludge is Good For You), Pat Holland, Norman Solomon (columnist and director of the Institute for Public Accuracy), Nancy Snow (California State University, Fullerton, author of Propaganda Inc. and Information War), Doug Kellner (UCLA), Julian Petley, Yvonne Ridley (Aljazeera.net and author of In the Hands of the Taliban), Tim Gopsill (Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom), Faisal Bodi (UK Guardian, Aljazeera.net), Alistair Alexander (Stop the War Coalition), Greg Philo (Glasgow University Media Group), Steve Dorrill, Andy Rowell, Granville Williams and cartoonists Steve Bell, Steve Caplin and Polyp.

this is a great book revealing all the lies put into our face by our very own media govt that we elect.everyone knows there were no evidence against WMD in iraq and attack on other countries are so unjustified.we have also being killing more than 500,000 iraqis since the sanction in 1994, and daily killings of palestinians in their own land. is the jewish n american life mor eprecious than the arabs? we apply state terrorism in our policy n to defend our dear friend israel, when this friend is actually the cause of all the problem in middle east. it is occupying someone's land and no action is taken about it, while we go around killing innocent people.and all the attacks were planned even earlier than 911.people with conscience and the right mind will find this book very interesting. Those whose brains have been programmed to reject anything that's against the govt or a certain illegal country might be a bit uncomfortable though reading this book.

This book is a compilation of articles written for this book by some of the worlds top journalists and scholars. It is a study of the methods by which the mass media decieves the people. The person believeing the contributors to be liers failed to understand that disagreing with them does not make them so. This is a great book for understanding the mechanics of propaganda in the US and everywhere. An excellent book by the people that understand what is going on.

A very interesting book well worth reading. There are not enough books like this- unique, new information concerning how our media is "full of it"---on the side of our enemies, anti-American as well as anti-Christian, immoral and amoral, and completely sold out to the money interests that they are supposed to warn us about and help to defend against. It even describes how the American media covers up massacres of women, children, and innocent males that were unecessary casualties and the brazen manner in which the American military handles and mocks these innocent victims. In addition, the price I paid for the book was very reasonable. Amazon does a great job and provides a fantastic service. I should add that the book is not by one author but by several contributing writers, making it more interesting in this venue.

Of course, this book is well-named. And it raises the question of why anyone would want to buy it, just to be told lies.

I simply don't understand why anyone would want to produce such stuff.

After all, there are quite legitimate things one could say about what we were told in the leadup to the war against Iraq. We all knew that Saddam Hussein had used poison gas against his own people. We knew that there was a question about Iraq's progress towards obtaining nuclear weapons, or at least enough of a threat to preclude an attack.

Can it be argued that the statements about the Iraqi nuclear weapons threat were false and that these statements caused us to reach a decision to go to war? I think a case can be made for it. But don't worry! The authors of this book do no such thing. They just say whatever nonsense pops into their heads and pretty much taunt their readers.

Can it be argued that the media are becoming ever more untrustworthy? Yes. A case can be made for that as well. And once again, the authors miss an opportunity to address their readers in a civilized and honest manner.

Folks, it doesn't have to be this way. If you have a case, please make it! When you want to expose lies, just do it! Sure, many of the authors of this book have very bad records when it comes to honesty. But I'd ignore that and just read the book on its merits if they would put the past behind them and simply tell the truth. And my advice has to be: if you want to fight lies, tell the truth. When you publish a book like this one, be on your best behavior.

In any case, the actual book is a ridiculous joke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tell me the truth
Reviewed in Japan on February 10, 2019
    This reader has never spent so much time reading and then re-reading some of the chapters in, "Tell me Lies". This reader absolutely loved 'War is Sell', 'No Blood for Oil', 'Let the Atrocious Images Haunt Us', 'Mass Deception: How the Media has Helped the Government Deceive the People' and 'Al Jazeera's War'. With four pages of notes and so many themes continually running through his head, essentially the book included the themes of Occupation is Liberation (Kellner) or was it Conquest is Liberation (Pilger); Massaging the Truth (Miller, Rowell) where an American bomb (from its' serial number) blew up innocents, but it was reported that it could have come from Hussein (which it obviously didn't) (Robert Fisk, Faisal Bodi);

Presenting a sanitised war were soldiers shoot but are never seen dying or injured and heaven forbid viewers never see blood or injured civilians. It was like a 'Bloodless War' , NBC Ashley Banfield. The Iraqi war was seen like a video game where there are 'clean kills', where a volley of missiles are described as 'precision guided', 'targets of opportunities' or even 'pinprick' strikes. The theme of 'embedding' is visited and re-visited on many occasions (Knightley, Freedman, Kellner, Miller et al.) With 'embedding' the issue looks at whether or not journalists become spin doctors, gung-ho cheer leaders, propagandists and have they lost their objectivity. Should journalists show more impartiality or is it just about getting the story correct? How can journalists remain impartial when they have to sign a contract to join a squad of soldiers and follow them around? Well, of course, they have a choice where if they don't sign, then they don't go.

Lastly, the issue of independent journalism is explored where the news agency Al Jazeera had complained about being bombed by 'friendly' fire. There is no such thing as 'friendly' fire when the bombs are reining down on you, but when it comes from an Allie, I suppose that's what it's called. (Ridley, Gopsill et. al). There is a joke that says, "When the Iraqi's fire, the Americans duck; When the English fire, the Iraqi's duck, but when the Americans fire everyone ducks". Al Jazeera complained about a hacking campaign that caused their website to be down for two days that could only be done on a level by a large company or corporate government (Faisal Bodi).

This reader hopes that his rather flimsy review gives the reader at least some insight into some of the arguments found in, "Tell Me Lies". Five Big Fat Stars for almost 300 pages of truth defying argument.
