"Stay away" -- Those are the two words written on the forehead of every pedophile murdered in San Francisco Bay Area.
Joshua Theaker is tasked with finding the killer whose killing methods involve strange weapons. Theaker and local law enforcement find it hard to agree on where the trail goes while local FBI is distracted by child kidnappings. For Theaker, there is a pattern among the victims. But just when Theaker thinks he is getting closer to the killer, he strikes again. And again.
"Readers won't expect what happens next, which is one of the specialties of Tell My Dad: it takes a murder mystery and twists its scenes so that what is seemingly inevitable becomes a big surprise... mystery packed with satisfying scenes and many a surprise to keep even seasoned thriller readers engrossed to the last page." - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
"It’s hard not to root for a protagonist ridding the world of scum, even if he’s a merciless killer." - Kirkus Review

There are many kidnappings happening in the San Francisco Bay area. Surprisingly enough, many of the victims are released to go back to their family and the perpetrators are being terminated with extreme prejudice. The FBI's job is to put an end to this 'vigilante justice'. Will they succeed?
There are several mini-stories going on throughout the novel. One story is key to understanding the 'killer's' rationale. Once you see that, it made me cheer for that person against the ugly evil that is present even though killing is wrong and punishable no matter who does it without being authorized by law or military command. If it had not been for Kindle Scout, I may never have seen this interesting book that made me realize that we all need to reinforce with our children and ourselves the rules for survival.
Warning: This is for Mature Audiences due to Violence along with Sexual and Adult Situations.
This is a quick read, but not an easy read, and not entirely because of the subject matter.
Joshua Theaker is the man tasked with finding the person responsible for killing paedophiles in the San Francisco Bay area. "Stay Away" is written at the scene, on the bodies, on the wall, on whatever is available at the time. The FBI is busy with a deluge of child kidnappings. It will take a man with nothing left to lose to bring it all together.
I found the first 20% of the book rather wooden and forced. The opening chapters were rushed and we had no opportunity to get a feel for any of the characters. After this the author became more relaxed in his writing style and the book flowed a little more easily and the characters were given a little more depth. A lot of the conversation was stilted and I don't know that the author has done much research into SOC procedure.
Despite this, I liked the story. I think it has a lot of potential in the hands of a good editor.
Warning: There are extreme levels of violence in this book.
Thank you to author Ram Muthiah for providing a digital ARC of Tell My Dad in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
It becomes increasingly clear that there is a serial killer on the loose. Only this killer is targeting the pedophiles and writes "Stay Away" or "Stay Away from Little Girls" on the foreheads of his victims. While the authorities are struggling trying to solve the recent rash of abducted girls in the San Francisco Bay area, a monk wearing a red robe and a mask has no problem finding the culprits - and he is doling out deserved justice, violently, to those who are guilty.
The plot of the story was based on real events which provided the author impetus to write Tell My Dad. Clearly the subject matter, rescuing young girls from harm by abductors, makes this a compelling novel where you are cheering for the serial killer because the abductors deserve to die (painfully). Muthiah provides a backstory for the vigilante later in the narrative that helps make sense of his reasons for seeking justice, at all costs, and how he acquired the skills to do so. It is a quick read and the action moves along at a fast pace.
So, the subject matter is gripping, which can account for the many high ratings; however, the actual quality of the writing is simply okay. Parts of the novel do not flow smoothly and feel choppy, especially at the beginning. The dialogue doesn't feel natural. There is a part later in the novel with an FBI intern that, well, no spoilers here but even I can't stretch my credulity that far. I was even unsure if I would finish it at one point, but I did want to see how Muthiah would conclude his novel.
In my final analysis, I will concede that if you don't take notice the quality of the writing and simple want a thriller with action the moves along swiftly, Tell My Dad fits the description.
