This is the fifth novella in the Almost Human series by author Melanie Nowak and unlike some series they do need to be read in order.
OK This series seriously has me hooked now. These installments are getting better and better. This particular one has a lot of backstory and I could not stop turning the pages. Of course that could be because I have a total Cain addiction right now and this was all about him. Love it (Even though I was more than a little heartbroken once or twice)!!
5 Stars and a demand for the 6th installment!

Cain has come to the decision that he must tell Felicity all about his past prior to becoming a vampire. His past was filled with betrayal, lies, murder and death. Cain grew up as Christian and spent his youth doing everything a boy of his breeding shouldn't. It was his brother Charles that always came to this defense especially after their father decided to throw Cain out of the house.
Cain had a plan to change his father's mind he would book passage to the New World, something he knew his father would hate. He was right of course, only things did not turn out as he had planned. Charles decided to go with his bride Maribeth and would join Cain in getting a piece of land and farming it. With no money Cain had no choice and he and Charles bought land and began farming it. Cain had no idea that he would love the work or that he would wind up betraying his brother by sleeping with his wife. In order to stop the affair Cain married and had a child, but was that enough to keep him faithful?
Although a lot of Cain's story is told in the beginning I don't want to give anything away other than it was at times heartbreaking. So much happened to Cain before becoming the monster he is and he has lived with regret about it all. He wants to prove to Felicity that he is someone she should stay away from but will his tale be enough to kill her love for him?
This part of the series held me glued to every page. There was so much to hate Cain for yet I couldn't help feeling for him. At times the story was sad and at times, if not happy then encouraging. Cain realizes that he can't be with Felicity without hurting her at some point but can he let her go?
I know I have said this before but reading this series in sections is absolutely amazing. I never tire of anything, I never feel that the story is dragging and I have something to look forward to each week.
