Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Tellington-Jones, an animal handler, here collaborates with Taylor ( The Last Run ) to explain the "TTouch"sic as a simple therapeutic animal-handling technique--"You make circles holding your fingertips, your fingers, or your hand in various positions using varying pressures"--that produces diverse results. To judge from the author's work since 1976 with assorted species (cats, dogs, horses, farm animals, exotics, even reptiles), the TTouch can dramatically alter animal behavior and "problem" personalities, speed up healing, alleviate pain, relieve tension and allow the animal and its keeper to work as a sensitive, cooperative team. Used in conjunction with positive "visualization" and techniques for mind-body realignment meant to change keepers' attitudes toward themselves as well as animals, the TTouch appears to engage not only practical but mystical bodywork, encouraging more intuitive communication between animals and humans. Tellington-Jones stresses that animals are not "lesser" creatures fit for domination; rather, they are complex emotional beings with whom we can live with mutual trust and pleasure. Entertaining and often moving, the manual may well inspire many to try the technique. Illustrations not seen by PW.

One of the questions i often ask myself is does my dog really know just how much i love him. After reading lindas book and trying the ttouch i got my answer. Yes he does and the feeling is returned ten fold. Thankyou linda

As a sales pitch for Tellington Touch, this book is great. As an instruction manual, it is totally worthless. Complex gestures such as those mentioned in the book need illustrations that take one step-by-step through the manipulation process. There aren't any, just a few photos that show one stop action part of the whole.

It did get me to take a T-Touch workshop, which was beneficial for my old and arthritic dog. The process works. The book doesn't.

I have applied the methods in this book to various cats at a homeless cat shelter. It is a lot of fun and the cats really like it too. The book has many fascinating stories of how Tellington developed her methods and how she has applied them to an incredible range of animal species.

Tellington-Jones, now in her 70s, has been connecting to animals all her life. Born Linda Ann Hood, she rode horseback to school in rural Alberta, Canada for the first six years and taught riding at age 13. She and her six siblings were famous at horse shows where they became known as the "Riding Hoods." Her grandfather, whose credentials included training racehorses for Czar Nicholas II in Russia, taught her a system of equine massage he had learned from Russian Gypsies. His influence and training plus her natural brilliance and experience with horses gave Linda an amazing ability to communicate with all animals. She married Wentworth Tellington and later Birchell Jones, both of whom were skilled horsemen. Both marriages were partnerships in riding, teaching, and equine research and publication. The couples won many awards and became well-respected experts.

In 1975, Tellington-Jones began training with Moshe Feldenkrais and combined his human bodywork method with Russian horse massage to form the now famous Tellington Touch Method. This book is about using that method with any animal. Moreover, it is a beautifully written, fascinating, and wondrous story of her experiences with all kinds of animals -- farm animals, wild animals, animals in zoos, and with fish, birds, and even reptiles -- as professional consultant and in her personal life.

Author Barry Lopez says: "What we do to animals troubles us . . . and our loss of contact with them leaves us mysteriously bereaved." Tellington-Jones has made that contact and masterfully demonstrates how we might as well. She approaches animals as complex emotional beings with whom we can live in mutual trust. In response, the animals are healed of physical pains and problem behaviors. Tellington-Jones also experiences intuitive communication with every kind of animal.

I thoroughly enjoyed this inspiring book.

I have found that animals get de-sensitized to basic petting and affection. I tried some of these techniques on my pets and it works. My pets really fight for my lap and attention. Highly recommend this book.

If you want to learn how to communicate with your animal companion on a different level, this is the book for you! I have used this to help heal my animal from being "high strung. Also, by working with my dog I was able to turn him around from being a "mouthy" fellow. Pulling and rubbing an animal's ears can keep him from going in shock. So many wonderful results using the TTEAM method. Highly recommend.

I bought this book on reccommendation of a wonderful puppy trianer when my dog had hurt his back. I started it but it is a difficult (boring) read. I do massage the dog's back from what I learned and the dog is better so.
