From the Inside Flap
Do you have a child who is into everything? Your energetic, bubbly child is often the center of attention and sometimes in the middle of trouble!
Or perhaps you have a child who is just the opposite: quiet, studious, and slow to warm up in social situations.
Then there's the future lawyer: that argumentative, willful child who sometimes makes you want to pull your hair out.
As parents, we all have, at one time or another, wondered: Where did this child come from? Why isn t he just like me? Am I doing something wrong?
You are not doing anything wrong, and there is very likely nothing wrong with your child! The differences described above are all differences in God-given temperament. When you understand your child's unique temperament, you will have the key to unlocking his behavior, moods, and motivational forces.
The end result is not only more effective discipline for day-to-day adventures but also a lifelong recognition of how to nurture your child's strengths as a loving and supportive parent, teacher, or grandparent. Become an active, compassionate participant in your child s social and spiritual formation and bring peace, happiness, and holiness to your family in the way God intended.
Art and Laraine Bennett provide an accessible synthesis of classical wisdom, modern counseling, science, Catholic spirituality, and wonderful storytelling to the four basic temperaments that serve as the foundation of one's personality and approach to life. This is the authors third book on the topic of temperaments, sharing not only their professional expertise but also their personal life experiences. They have been married for thirty-four years and have four children one each of the four temperament types!

It starts off with explaining what temperaments are. Then it describes each of the 4 temperaments and how kids belonging to any temperament behave; what their inherent strengths and weaknesses might be; why some kids are the life of the class while others are quiet observers, etc. I really enjoyed this part that has a lot of real life experiences. When I was reading the temperament that matches mine, it was so much fun and I could see so many things that I did as a child. This information is enlightening in a way that once you understand your temperament, you get a panoramic view of why your strengths and weaknesses are easy or difficult for you. As I was reading the pages, behaviors and patterns of others also flashed before me and I was able to see the temperaments of some other people in my life. When you start understanding temperamental behaviors in others, its easier to forgive other people for those. The next section helps the parent identify their temperament and then comes a very interesting section where we see what happens when a parent and a child of different or same temperament interacts. The last section elaborately sketches the great and not so great things in each temperament and also gives very good and practical insight on how parents should help nurture the best in children of different temperaments. I feel this is key information for good parenting. In a single read it helps understand your child's as well as your temperament and how to best interact.
I personally feel this book is a gem. I never read late at night as I doze off. I just finished this book at 1:30 at night and wanted to put out a review telling what a great find this is. I have all 4 of these author's books but found this the most breeziest and enjoyable read. If you have not read any of the authors' book, I would say start here (or The Temperament God Gave You) and then decide for yourself.
My only caveat is that it does not really go deeply into understanding which temperament your child is. There is a very brief one question survey that is supposed to help you determine the main temperament (in addition to the details which describe the temperament under each specific temperament chapter). Children are so diverse when they are young, that they can exhibit many reactions over the course of a day to many different situations and stimuli. My 7 year old son is very obvious, as he has always shown consistency in his behavior, actions, and reactions. However, my 5 year old daughter is not as consistent or obvious. Pinpointing her temperament has been much more puzzling, since this past year she has "come out of her shell," so to speak.
It is a good book to reference. But, after how detailed and in depth the other book was, I am slightly disappointed in this one. Especially since some of the information and anecdotes are exactly the same...but the same thoroughness is not there.
