4.0 out of 5 stars A Quality Purchase at a More-Than-Quality Price
By Gene D. on September 1, 2017
Forgive the backstory; but, I believe it serves a purpose in the overall review. If you want, please feel free to skip to the “Pros,” “Cons,” and/or “Recommended Purchase” sections. A few months ago my family and I moved into a new home, next to a wonderful neighbor who is, to say the least, a cigar enthusiast. I dabbled in cigars over the years and enjoy smoking quality cigars, from time to time. My wife is from Nicaragua. When we visit, it’s the perfect opportunity to get fine cigars at a reasonable price (declared, of course). With the cigar purchases, I needed a humidor. I bought a cheap one years ago. However, the attempt to setup and maintain the humidor, repeated over a period of years, failed miserably. I was young, inexperienced, impatient, neglectful, and severely ill-informed about, well, really anything having to do with humidors and cigar maintenance. This was evidenced by a host of dried out and -- finally the reason why I discarded the humidor a gave up -- molded cigars. A good talk with my new neighbor and now good friend, over a nice Ashton Classic and fine single-malt, once again sparked my interest in keeping cigars around. An aficionado in his own right, he (and others, both online and in person) steered me down the path leading to my various cigar-related purchases -- one of which was the Quality Importers desktop humidor. After roughly four months of use, here’s my experience with the humidor so far.

Pros: The humidor presents a beautiful, dark, cherry finish (although please see Cons). Its sides are lined with fairly-thick planks of Spanish cedar (a trusted wood for use in humidors). The bottom is also lined with a thinner, cedar plank, which, although thinner, serves its purpose. In addition, Quality Importers provided a Spanish cedar divider, which has foam rubber on both ends of the plank, to keep the divider in place in the humidor (please see Cons). The planks, which are inserted in such a way that they are slightly taller than the humidor’s outer casing, create a seal (at least on mine) that passed the dollar-bill test with flying colors. Hinges and screws -- all of which are gold-plated -- are of seemingly good quality. The pivot arm used to mount the base to the lid is recessed cleanly. Included is a fairly-accurate (and adjustable) analog hygrometer. After performing the salt test on the hygrometer, mine was off by only 3% (the product description notes it can be off +/-5%; so, it was in spec. I dialed it in easily enough. It’s been consistent ever since (confirmed by this back-up, calibrated, cost-conscious, digital hygrometer: https://www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Digital-Thermometer-Humidity-Hygrometer/dp/B008JL1M4A/ref=cm_cr-mr-title). The cutout for the analog hygrometer is sufficient, seal-wise. The reinforced glass top is nice in that it doesn’t seem like a simple, cheap pane of glass/plastic; and, it allows you to see your cigars -- a) how they’re doing in their environment (without continually opening it and changing the RH) and b) simply to admire those beauties. While there is very slight play in the glass, it doesn’t seem to affect the seal to any significant degree. The included humidifier is a nice add (although please see Cons). Its housing is typical, black plastic. The core is “wet foam brick,” like those used to keep flowers fresh, covered in a wire mesh. It has a strong magnet on the back, allowing it to attach to an included metal disc, which you adhere to the inside of the humidifier using double-sided foam tape already stuck to the back of the disc. Quality Importers didn’t need to include the humidifier. Given they did, it’s a pro in my book. The underside of the humidor provides a nice-looking, black, velvet-like material to better ensure the humidor doesn’t mar anything on which it sits. As an added benny, the company provided an engraveable brass nameplate. It’s cheap and uses an adhesive backing to adhere it to the box; but, it’s a nice add, nonetheless, especially if giving the humidor as a gift or if you simply want to customize your humidor.

Cons: The biggest con for me was the fact that my humidor came with a small scratch in the finish. However, I’m nitpicking there, as the finish was generally good. Another minor gripe involves the cedar-plank divider. Quality Importers placed foam rubber on either side of the plank (typical of these types of humidors). I’m not sure how it would be possible to execute the adhesion of the rubber to the plank better; however, the foam rubber is adhered to the plank using double-sided foam tape. If you need to reposition the plank, which I did a few times to fit the cigars I had on-hand at the time, the foam dislodges from the ends of the plank. I continually needed to reposition the foam on the ends of the plank to ensure it was aligned properly (especially given the glass top allows you to see in the box at all times). But, I am very picky about such things... others might not care. Another, very minor gripe, is the size of the included humidifier. It juts out a little and has the potential to inhibit lid closure if positioned too high on any of the humidor’s sides. There are alternatives out there, but, I want to give this humidifier a chance for now. Although, the metal disc offers a generous amount of space to move the humidifier around -- I wanted the disc and the humidifier perfectly aligned -- before adhering the metal plate to the inside of your humidor, spotcheck the location (before adhering it to the humidor) to ensure it will allow the lid to close without issue.

General Comments: Research the heck out of how to properly set up and maintain a humidor. Patience and proper knowledge is key to success. Watch videos from trusted cigar makers and resellers. Read blogs. Talk to those who successfully maintain their own humidors. If you don’t know such people, find them. They’re invaluable and can open up a whole new, enjoyable, cigar-laden world for you. When you get your humidor, don’t rush to buy cigars and throw them in -- as hard as it will be to resist this urge. You’ll likely regret rushing things. I know from experience, as a number of fine cigars went well before their time… at least until what I’d consider a recent success with the Quality Imports humidor. Unpackage and inspect your humidor. Test the seal by performing the dollar bill test. Test the accuracy of the hygrometer using the salt test. Calibrate your hygrometer(s) accordingly. Clean your humidor properly. Hydrate it properly. Some use distilled water to hydrate their humidifier. I tried that previously but had better luck this time with propylene glycol (this one, from Amazon -- https://www.amazon.com/Xikar-Propylene-Glycol-Humidor-Solution/dp/B004XWIZV2) and two Boveda 72% RH packs (also available on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Boveda-Percent-Humidity-Control-4-Pack/dp/B004LHQEOY). Boveda’s are wonderful in helping maintain a static RH. Let the humidor stabilize for at least two weeks before putting cigars in it. Once you add cigars, watch your RH closely to see how the environment changes (as it will). Adjust accordingly, intentionally, and methodically. Another consideration, environments (RH, seal, etc.) vary..s so might your tobacco-keeping needs and particular tastes. Boveda provides different RH packs to suit various experiences and environments. Different RH levels can affect your cigar’s health, draw, flavor, burn rate, and other things. Different environments (e.g., humidors vs tupperdors) require different RH. Finally, please don’t take what I offer as lore. It worked for me, for my environment... this time around. It might not work for you and yours. Research for your particular environment, needs, and cigar expectations. The time spent (and your related patience) in learning about, preparing, and maintaining your humidor will be well worth the health of your cigars and the quality smoke they bestow upon you in return. IMHO, FWIW, the Quality Importers humidor is a great first step.

Recommended Purchase?: I used the Quality Importers desktop humidor for four or five months now. Based on the price, the quality of this humidor (made for those of us falling more of the thrifty side, but definitely serving the purpose well)… in addition to the bennies Quality Importers gives you with the purchase, yes, I recommend it as a four-star purchase. Should a need arise to change my review, I’ll do so ASAP. Until then, I wish you all a most-enjoyable smoke.

2.0 out of 5 stars Loses Humidity. Poor hygrometer seal. Don’t buy
Reviewed in Canada on March 18, 2019
Nice looking humidor but it started losing humidity after about 7 months of use. Had it for almost a year now. It seems it’s been losing air from where the hygrometer is installed. Had to seal it with tape. Sent an email to the seller. Haven’t heard from them at all. Almost 4 moths now.
I don’t recommend this product. Wish I had spent a little more and buy a better quality humidor.
