Mackenzie goes through her first change all alone and too close to civilization and something tragic happens and she can’t control her emotions or her temper. I don’t want to spoil anything but it forces Mack to realize she needs to leave school and head deep into the forest. Days before her second change and closer to the forest she stops at a bed & breakfast spot where she meets some interesting people. After another horrible change she discovers they are like her, werewolves.
Mack is leery but hopeful when they offer her to come back to their pack with them. She quickly falls for Geoff but Margaret the alpha disapproves of it citing some pure blood rule about mating. Nonetheless, they help her prepare for her third change and try to prevent her harming anyone while she is in wolf form. Sadly, Mack harms a camper, Liam, but he survives only to have the same fate as Mack. Needless to say, Liam is pissed at her once he recovers from the attack and she gets it, she’s still pissed at the rogue that bit her. Liam isn’t sure he wants the pack life and goes home promising to return by the next change.
Liam returns and greets Mack with some expected hostility. That hostility changes once he realizes how out of control new werewolves can be. Mack and Liam become closer as things are up in the air with Geoff and the talking to she got from the alpha. It quickly turns into a battle for the girl and who will win nobody knows at this point.
Mack starts getting weird vibes about things the alpha has said/done and a chance discovery of seeing someone from her first time changing sets her hair on end big time. Almost instantly with a bit of help from Liam she discovers who that someone is and learns life with the pack isn’t what she bargained for. The end is really intense and sees Mackenzie, Geoff and Liam making a major decision that will affect their lives in ways that are unsure of.
I received this book for free from NetGallery in exchange for an honest review. I have also purchased the book as well.
This is not your typical boy bites girl werewolf story :) Mackenzie is also not your typical girl. Her father is a convict and her mother pushes her to be an underachiever but she will have none of that. Mack is a mythology major at Harvard and she works really hard to keep up her grades and pay for school. She will be an ivy league success no matter what anyone thinks! Little does she expect her whole life to be turned upside down by standing up to some rich bullies at a football game.... Next thing she knows she is attacke by a wolf and her safe happy world is gone forever.
This story is humerous and full of action. Not knowing what is going on lends mystery and suspense. The adventure comes in as Mackenzie tries to deal with her ever evolving perception of what is happening to her. It is a mystery she is determined to solve no matter the consequences. Romance enters the picture in a big way when she is at her lowest point dreading the horror of the night to come.
All in all this is a very promising beginning to what looks to be an awesome series. I would recommend this book to paranormal enthusiaists and werewolf lovers everywhere! I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next one The Enlightening (The Mackenzie Duncan Series) :)
***This book is suitable for young adult through adult readers
It seems like the story was published without an editor and could have greatly benefited from some thorough polishing. There's definitely potential and it is a good story in general but I won't be buying the second book.
I was captured by the strong Mackenzie Duncan character from the first few pages and I knew I wasn't going to be finishing that 'other' book anytime soon!
The characters, lore and locations are all well developed. The editing VERY good (is any publication perfect?) and I'll be reading whatever this gal writes - especially the next book in The Mackenzie Duncan Series!
Also, this author has an issue that I see too often - passed and past. Wrong use of the word is maddening and too often done.

I haven't read a true werewolf book in a while, and my how I missed them. The Tempering was just what I was in the mood for. A feisty, tough protagonist.Read more
