I was using an off brand 5wt to catch this size catfish. The off brand had a much faster action but the presentation was not quite what i was looking for. I used it for years and loved it for its shootability when sight fishing for bass.
This combo does not shoot as well as the other, but presentation is awesome! The rod is medium fast, which has caused me to slow down when making long accurate casts, my catch ratio has increased due to less spooked fish.
The rod does not have very much lift, so fighting smaller bass/bream is still lots fun with a light tippet.
On to the catfish. There are many 10-30lb catfish in the pond, i feed them every once in awhile just to check on them. When i do this i usually bring my other 5wt to battle these beasts. They are fun because they reddily take small 1-1/2" flies that are easy to cast, and the fight can last for over 10 minutes. I am surprised that i landed this fish because i was not prepared to hook it. It swam by me while fishing for bass/ bream so i tossed the fly in front of it and it accepted the challenge.
I landed the fish with the combo as it came in the box. No changes. Just added the fly. All of the knots held and were gliding through the eyes without a hiccup, including the nail knot used to attach to the backing.
