A new resident in Japan, Samuel Williams is divorced and about to begin teaching English in an attempt to rebuild a life that has drifted depressingly far from his original hopes and dreams. After an explosion nearly kills him, Sam wakes in a hospital room and is shocked to find a beautiful Japanese woman of whom he has dreamt since childhood standing beside his bed. The woman, Suteko, explains that she has also been dreaming of him and that their meeting is not an accident; it is, instead, the result of the Echoes of Eternity, a powerful variant of the average person's deja vu. She also explains that they are two of only a few dozen Temporal people who can function in some fashion outside of time. Unfortunately, before she can fully explain, a series of murders and the actions of an evil group known as the Nephloc send Sam on the run, alone.
And so begins a thrilling ride that puts the fate of the United States' government and maybe even the entire world in Sam and Suteko's hands. Can Sam come to terms with the part that he must play before the Nephloc remove him from the equation? The answer will leave you breathless and questioning the very underpinnings of our world.
And it wasn't. I enjoyed the book for what it is.
But..as clean as the writing was, and the appropriateness of the Japanese phrases. The pain and hurt of the Main Character, MC, I just didn't feel the magic of the novel.
Everywhere I read, I look for that moment that I go "Wow. See. This is why I would LOVE to have super powers." Sorry, I guess this wasn't about a superhero novel.
If you're reading this review, don't let my comment deter you from getting it. The novel is good in what it does. A fun story telling of a man discovering he has a destiny that isn't as simple as being an English teacher...
But for me....there was no magic...sorry Mr. Martin.
You can write. But I will not buy.
Most of the secondary characters are a bit flat. I would have liked more nuance, but with a fast-paced thriller and I enjoyed it.
The story starts out casual with a minor taste of the supernatural side up to the point were you start seeing more of the abilities of each character. I was expecting something way different and bit more tame but when I got a couple chapters in, things did change in a way I didn't see coming. You really start to connect with the primary characters and want to know more. You end up to a point where you know you should stop to sleep or what have ya, but can't stop reading. I absolutely loved this book and will read it multiple times. You get a nice fix of some interesting action setups as well unexpected events. Never really hit any dull boring moments it holds strong till the last page. If you like this type of SciFi with a few humans with powers living in a regular world and fighting to protect it you need to have this book.
The author's attention to details and
descriptive style makes me feel like I am in the story.!
But not all gifted people are good and soon we find that Sam has to contend with powerful forces that want to capture and control his gifts. Sam and Suteko must work together to stop a plot that could send the nation into ruin.
The action is tense and the well-crafted plot moves along at a nice pace. Even though this is a thriller, the language is extremely mild and there is nothing else objectionable in the story making it suitable for a very wide range of readers. If I could, I would give this 4 1/2 stars.
