It's early in the Eighteenth Century, and trouble between the Scots and the English reach a boiling point. The Scottish clans meet the English occupation, taxation, and aggression with belligerence, rebellion, and equal ferocity.

Julia Bradford is a young Englishwoman trapped by the circumstances brought on by the premature death of her parents. Her amazing intellectual gifts and aura of kindness are disregarded by most, relegated as inconsequential because of her status as chattel. Julia becomes a pawn in her guardian uncle's dark quest for money, power, and an urge to control her captivating beauty. Julia's powerless role is, of course, due to the societal restrictions imposed on young, unmarried women.

The hero of the story, Calum MacLean, is an exciting contrast. Blessed with physical beauty on the surface, we find a young Scottish laird, deeply troubled by his role, lacking confidence, and unsure of the direction necessary for his life and the welfare of the clan.

I liked the virtues, flaws, and hesitant strength of the main characters. The underlying theme of the clan, helping one another to achieve success in the face of great adversity, imparts a timely message for people to heed during these difficult times.

They each have had dreams of the other but say nothing to the other. She’s English and Calum doesn’t like that but she can save his clan. As she helps she and Calum get closer and fall in love but her uncle finds her! She gets an ultimatum go with him or he’ll kill the clan she just helped save! What will she do? You can not go wrong stepping into this time with this author doing giving the ability to get there through the pages. The Highlanders she puts forth are slobber worthy for sure. Juila gives us her woes and she thinks escape is the answer to these. What finds her though is Calum and then the magic begins. Romance is woven along with their story. As it gets deeper though those lovely secrets people seem to find they must comes along to slowly come to light with also a way that has to be figured out on if the love of two is to come out on top. The unraveling of this gets us going. We follow the words and are given our fill to satisfy that craving for a moment.

Her opportunity comes when their coach is held up . In the confusion, she flees into the nearby woods and is found by three Scotsmen who are willing to take her along with them to the Isle of Mull. One of the men, Angus, the laird's brother, takes one look at Julia believes she is just what is brother, Calum needed. Laird Calum is immediately suspicious but is drawn to her--as he has seen her in his dreams. Having your heart broken and betrayed makes it hard to trust in love again.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book--did not want to put it down. Action and intrigue throughout with some humor thrown in as well. Looking forward to Angus' and Charlotte's story as the extended epilogue alludes to.
