The Temptation was a major disappointment for me. I didn't have extremely high hopes for this book, due to the mixed reviews, but I did expect the narrator to at least be tolerable. None of the characters were very well developed. The plot was ridiculous, and the insta-love was unhealthy to say the least. The world-building and writing were pretty good, and the pacing was okay. Due my absolute hatred of Shane, though, I just could not enjoy this book.

Shane has got to be one of the most obnoxious narrators I've ever read. The girl overreacted to everything. EVERY-FREAKING-THING. She'd get intensely terrified at the drop of a hat. By page 100, I was wishing that she had just died in the car accident in the beginning of the book and that the story had been about someone else. Also, her obsession with Travis? Creepy to the extreme. When she's not throwing herself at him and whining and begging for a kiss, she's basically stalking him. I mean I try not to judge all novels that have insta-love, but this was not a healthy situation. And Shane is so STUPID. She makes one dumb mistake after the other, and for some ungodly reason, she insists on taking her dog with her EVERYWHERE. Then when something happens to the dog, which obviously it will because you're taking it to inappropriate spots in the first place, then she blames everyone but herself. She's self-absorbed and doesn't care how her actions affect others. She does what she wants, then whines and apologizes like an idiot later. She's the weakest and sorriest excuse of a main character I've seen lately. Okay. I think I'm done with this rant. *Takes a deep breath*

Moving on, the rest of the characters are extremely bland. Travis is nothing special, in my opinion.

This is one of those books I wanted to love, but just fell flat for me. I could never get into it. From the beginning the story and characters felt forced. Alisa Valdes starts The Temptation out with a huge storm that I feel like I never found my way out of.

Let me also say, that I am finding I am not a huge fan of ghost stories. As in, where a ghost plays a central role. I've tried reading several and I can never connect with them. This book definitely slid into that category.

Shane was a weak narrator and, to me, had a very young voice. Travis, her love interest was all right, but I never felt any chemistry between them. It seemed like a quick insta-connection and those tend to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Valdes has a great concept, but I just felt it got jumbled. Too much happened too quick and then stalled and then raced forward. It was very jerky, not fluid. I actually started skimming in later chapters to see if the end payoff was worth all the confusion and frustration. While it was a bit enlightening (hence why I'm giving this a C rating), I wasn't moved by it. I still never felt that connection to the characters or story that would keep me invested.

I doubt I'll pick up the rest of the series, but there are a lot of people who seemed to enjoy this story. Again, if you like ghostly tales, give it a go. Unfortunately I have found that I'm not a fan, and thus I didn't really enjoy this one.

I really, really wanted to love this book! It sounded so interesting, so tempting, and I had high expectations for it. But, The Temptation fell flat for me. It wasn't the story that I didn't like. Shane and Travis were adorable, although at times the connection they had seemed forced and weird. I really loved the paranormal/supernatural/ghost thing that this Kindred series is about. That is the main reason why I will read the next one. (Uh, that cliffhanger is killing me!)

It was the writing that I couldn't get past. It didn't seem to flow, and this made it hard to read the story. There were many things in this book that seemed out of place and unnecessary. Some things really didn't add anything to Shane and Travis's story.

So while I want to read the next book in the Kindred series, I'm not eager to run out and buy it the first day it hits shelves.

Temptation started off really good, there was a horrible accident in the beginning which kind of set all these chain of events in place. Shane was badly hurt but lucky for her, Travis was there to help her. To me, he was the most interesting person in this book. Travis turns out to be dead, but at the same time very much alive to some point. Interesting huh? But that's it. After that, the story died for me.

Can temptation lead into love? Sure, with time. But in this novel, love became a factor almost immediately and that's where my problem lays. Shane became unbelievably in love with Travis after meeting him for the very first time. Now normally instant love hardly ever bothers me and I believe that you can meet someone and be immediately attracted to them. So that concept hardly troubled me when I read about it. But it's a problem for me in this book. The insta-love here was completely and utterly unbelievable. I felt there wasn't enough character to character interaction for there to be any love. Her obsession for him completely turned me off. Had the author taken her time developing the character's relationship then lead into love, this book could have been amazing.

Lets put aside the whole unbelievable love story between the characters and focus on the remaining part of the story. The story behind Travis is a bit of a mystery and it was intriguing. What happened that lead to his death was what kept me reading. Travis has a brother (who is a huge knuckle head) and I think if this was his brother's story it would have been a bit more appealing. Maybe if the author had wrote about the brothers instead, I would have enjoyed it more.

Sadly, I didn't enjoy this story as must as I hoped. But if you're into this kind of story. A dead soul and a human girl who fall in love immediately. Then I say go ahead and give it a try. Just because it didn't work for me, it can work for you. I give this book a 2.5 stars.
