Jasmine is down on her luck after just getting out of prison. She committed a 'crime' to protect her daughter and got a rotten deal. She meets two kids in the park who are seemingly abandoned. Turns out, their nanny is just a lush. After taking a job as the kid's nanny, she starts to care for them and their mercurial father Victor. Victor has been burned by love and in turn buries himself in his work which leads to him emotionally neglecting his children. It's so bad that his oldest son doesn't even speak to him. Then Jasmine comes along and changes his perspective and ramps up his libido.
This couple goes through a lot of drama. Victor got on my nerves a lot because he couldn't make up his mind on how he felt about Jasmine. And the fact that he couldn't see through that harpy Madison and how she was damaging his daughter was even more annoying. Thankfully his mother Madeline was there to knock some sense into him. Men can be so hard headed. I understood Jasmine's reluctance, but I felt like had she been a honest a little earlier on, things might have been different. Never let someone else tell your story for you. Overall, I liked these two together. I enjoyed the children a lot and every woman wishes she had a mother in law like Madeline. The epilogue to this was a nice cherry on top. Definitely worth a read.
The hero, Victor, seems to be intelligent and determined but comes across as weak in his dealings with women - the wife and girlfriend that never was . Yet was all alpha in the way he handled the heroine, Jasmine. While Jasmine as a heroine left me unsure.
Normally Ms Vaughn’s heroines are kickass or shy/naive But with a backbone. I couldn’t make my mind up which one Jasmine was so I couldn’t buy into some of the decisions she made- I wasn’t sure she came across as credible sometimes.
The relationships with the characters evolved well if a bit quickly. Past conflict in some relationships were dealt with but very quickly. Sometimes I felt a bit more exploration/explanation would have been good. I did kinda love the mom, she made me smile a time or two.
Overall, I enjoyed this book but not as much as other books by Ms Vaughn.
Overall, the story was enjoyable. Dark with sexiness/heat, angst, romance, overcoming demons and coming out on top. I highly recommend this book. Five stars!
