It was sweet and cute. Aly and Dillon were likeable characters, who had reasonably reasons to hold back.
The only thing that brought this story down from four stars to three stars for me, was Dillons "sleeping with anything that moves" ways, before he finally came to his senses about Aly.
I always find it disappointing and slightly off putting when the H has a revolving bedroom door, especially when this one claims he's loved her for years.
Is that meant to show that he's a real man? He's attractive to other women? He's a stud?
I don't know, but I just find it slightly gross.
Well let me say that I was wrong and I never should have doubted Gina. I could not put this story down. It was laugh out loud funny, swoony sexy, and all around a terrific read.
Our heroine, Alyssa Miller has been in love with her best friend, Dillon Alexander since she was 6 years old and he was 8. I loved Alyssa and her quirky personality. I love how she is slightly OCD...I'm married to one of those! :) She likes things a certain way in her life and doesn't like to deviate from her structure. Dillon on the other hand is completely delicious! Tall, dark hair and a body perfect enough to even be Tarzan along with such a wonderful, compassionate heart!
Alyssa's love life has been lacking. She decides she needs to spice things up so she is going to subtly try to let Dillon know that she would like something more with him. He doesn't bite. What she doesn't know is that Dillon has been in love with her too but he's afraid to ruin what they do have. When Dillon doesn't make a move, Alyssa decides she is going to have a one-night stand while she is in Las Vegas at a Romance Novel Convention. This doesn't sit well with Dillon of course and his "older" sister convinces him he needs to go to Las Vegas and be the person Alyssa needs.
I loved their time in Las Vegas. It was sweet, sexy, funny and tender all wrapped together. I loved the characters that popped up...Trent, Marilyn, Elvis...they were a riot! It was a perfect happy ending for such a fun story. Well done Gina! I'm sure hoping that we will be getting a story for Maddie! She sounds like she could be a great story!
I was given an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review, even though I had already pre-ordered this story. Get this story...you won't be sorry.
Alyssa Miller is in love with her best friend, Dillon – and has been for years. After yet another disappointing evening of being friend-zoned, she decides to head to Vegas for a weekend romance convention, sure she can blow off some steam (as well as her sexual frustration) with a cover model or two. I enjoyed this as an opening; it was both believable and fun. Although I’ve heard from more than one author that cover models at romance cons are really basically cattle.
What Alyssa doesn’t know is that Dillon returns her feelings of love and frustration. For years he’s kept his hands off her to spare her certain heartbreak. After all, he’s the son of a philanderer, and he’d certainly be no better. But when he hears Alyssa’s plans for a no-strings-attached steamy weekend in Sin City, he decides that no one but himself will make her naughty dreams come true. I loved this set up! The fact that his jealousy prompts him to act, his misplaced chivalry of trying to protect her… I enjoyed it all.
Without posting spoilers, I can tell you that Alyssa’s not in Vegas long before Dillon finds her – and the sparks between them ignite into an inferno. They both know they’ll probably get burned, but with traditional Maxwell fervor, they can’t help themselves. Of course, flames that hot mean someone’s going to get burned, and that’s exactly what happens.
For me, this is where the novel loses one star. I felt the end of the book was unrealistic, a bit overdone, and dare I say it – clichéd. It was also over very quickly – they meet up, they have several passionate encounters, they have harsh words, there’s a chase scene … and then it’s over. I realize this book centers around what happens in Vegas; but for me, I’d have liked to see more character development and conflict, for the story to continue once they got home. It’s why I think I prefer Gina’s Fighting for Love series (at least so far) because those books are longer and are fraught with tension. That’s not to say this book was bad; merely that it could have been fleshed out further. As an aside, I also think the book should be titled Tempting HIS Best Friend, since Dillon was the one with the idea in the first place.
The best aspect of this book for me was a secondary character named Trent. I really hope we see him again – he was delightful and *just* campy enough to make one smile.
Favorite Quote: “I’m only being honest. And having the kind of chemistry that burns up the sheets and breaks lamps is nothing to be ashamed about.” Behind him, quiet gasps and what might have been a mutter “Amen” barely registered on his radar.
