Book 4 in Pamela Clare's Colorado High Country series. This is the best one yet. I have Loved every single one in the series. They're all in my private collection. But this one seemed like so much more.
The sign of a good book for me is a book that makes me run thru all the emotions and feel like I'm actually a part of the story. I shed tears from sadness and also tears from extreme happiness. All these emotions went thru my mind while reading this. There was anger, self-doubt, scared, emotionally drained, pain. There was also thankful, acceptance, lots of laughter, confidence in oneself, happiness and of course Love.
Naomi and Chaska's story made me feel like I was there with them. Their journey to love is Soo good you'll want to re-read it time and again. I know I sure will.
Chaska Belcourt, member of the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team and a genius engineer for an aerospace firm, is put into the path of Naomi, a beautiful woman, who had the unfortunate luck to come across two escaped convicts while vacationing in the beautiful mountains and escaping to peace for herself. With her strength and determined fight to survive, she flees from the convicts after defending herself, but she is injured in the process. Chaska is on a hike with his spitfire of a sister, Winona, and her rescue wolf, Shota. Win is constantly getting on his case about dating and is pestering him about asking Nicole out (another volunteer on the team), but he doesn't date those on the team and doesn't have that kind of interest in Nicole. He lightheartedly says to Win that he'll wait for the right woman to come along and that "Creator" can feel free to put her in his path at any time. Little did he know what was in store for him. Shota picks up a scent and rushes out of Chaska and Winona's sights, and when they catch up with the wolf, he's laying beside Naomi, unconscious and injured.
This begins the budding romance and experiences that get right to the heart of you with Chaska and Naomi. Naomi hasn't had an easy life from the moment she was born. She was abandoned a few hours after she was born and fortunately found before dying of hypothermia. To add insult to injury, she was adopted by religious fanatics, Peter and Ruth, who literally beat her into submission in their crazy beliefs and made her feel practically like the scum of the earth if she didn't heed to their teachings. How Naomi survived through that and all her hardships without becoming a basket case drowning in some type of addiction or self pity was a miracle in itself.
Naomi's injuries from escaping her attackers kept her from being able to return home until she healed enough, and this is where Winona and Chaska step in. They invite her to stay at their house for her recovery. And the town of Scarlet Springs steps up to help in her recovery as well. Anyone would blessed to live in a town like Scarlet Springs and how they rally around someone who is a complete stranger.
Chaska's amazing talents as an engineer have brought many needed tools and gear for the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. The fact that he creates these things without thinking to patent or sell them is quite incredible. He wants people to build on what he's created and better them in order to have the necessary items to save people. The banter that goes on with the team is absolutely hilarious, and you can feel the camaraderie among this team. And it's so genuine. There were times I was in tears with the banter but also in tears because of some of the experiences they are going through with other team members. It brought back memories of some dear friends I have lost in the climbing/alpine community. It's truly a strong-knit community and absolutely heartbreaking with any type of loss.
There were some moments that I was laughing so hard I was crying in this book, and it made me look at jalapenos in a whole different way. Pamela knows how to make you laugh one minute and in the next, make you feel a bond with her characters that hits you right in the gut. The journey that Chaska and Naomi went through was so heartfelt the traditions of the Lakota brought into the story were absolutely beautiful. I loved that we got to see some other characters from the I-Team in this story as well such as Zach McBride and briefly, Gabe Rossiter along with Kat. Pamela smoothly integrates other characters from her books into other stories wonderfully.
Tempting Fate definitely left me feeling all kinds of emotions, and I was sad when it ended, but eagerly anticipate the next story in the Colorado High Country series. Pamela, you've done it again. Thank you for bringing Chaska and Naomi's story to us and for making it a beautiful one.
I highly recommend this book as Pamela Clare does not only excel at weaving a story which is hard to put down with wonderful characters you feel like you know and love, her research and knowledge of topics specific to each story is unparalleled. Whether it is Native American traditions, drug trafficking, female prisoner abuse, Pamela opens your eyes to the details of realities most of us are not familiar with. Excellent story, can't wait for the next one!!
The best way to describe this book is a beautifully poignant Love Story, wrapped around the culture of a proud nation and rising from a heartbroken childhood! This book has everything you want from a novel. You have moments of laughter, sadness, anger, fear, righteous indignation, and of course that warmth that you want to find as you are pulled into the story as if you were there.
Chaska is a heck of a hero! Proud, kind, warrior in the Lakota sense, warrior in the Webster's Dictionary sense, and of course hot as hell! Naomi, could have come off as a broken woman from all her tragedy, but she is fierce, sassy, and strong. She's a perfect complement to her hero and, it's nice to see a story where the hero is smart enough to see it early on!
