"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. I was lucky and received an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to leave an honest review.
Under the Moon - Tally Bane - This story is hot. Drawing the reader in and refusing to let go. Featuring two sexy shifters partaking in post-reunion pursuit sex. This one is pretty much all action (wink, wink) but is very well-written and a nice start to the book. 5 Stars.
The Guardian - Siobhan Kearney - This is one of the best stories in the anthology. This is the story of a magical guardian meeting a modern woman. Heavy on the plot and characterization. The story has the best male character in the anthology. It features a cute dog and a soulmate connection. The ending is perfect. And I'm not ashamed to admit I cried a little. Good tears. 5 stars.
Safe Within her Skin - Liadain Douglas - Beautiful writing about a selkie with a stolen skin recovering it and reuniting with her mate. I would have liked to have had more action at the beginning, but this is still a good story. 4.5 Stars
Brave Magics - Miranda Deacon - Threesome romance. I didn't really get into this. The sex was good. But it wasn't my cup of tea. 3.5 stars
A Love of Her Own - Moxie Rivers - I loved this story about a Vampire looking for love. The characterization was great. And there is a great twist that I don't want to spoil. 5 Stars.
Specter - Annika Steele - A unique threesome romance featuring an unanchored soul and his partner falling in love with another while searching for a cure. This story was unique in that it wasn't explicitly Halloween or Samhain themed. 4 stars
Death and the Lady - Charli Decker - This is kind of what it says on the tin. Death finds love. I liked this one. 4.5 stars.
The Rising of the Moon - Ava Bari - A cute college romance with a hint of the supernatural. 4 stars.
Preparations and Decorations - Airenn Martlock - Another threesome story. I really didn't get into it. It was kind of slow. 3 stars.
A Night of Learning - Nyssa Whitehead - A regency romance featuring a werewolf and an appreciative wizard. Very unique in both the execution and the delivery. The writing was a bit stilted, like the author isn't used to writing dialogue. 4 stars.
Midnight Masquerade - V.T. Charbonneau - This was another of my favorites. The characters were fun and funny and the plot was great. Max is probably the best female character in the series. I only wish we had more time with her and Theo. 5 stars.
Tricks and Treats - Livvy Ward - A cute story featuring Eros and his new lady love at a costume party. 4 stars.
Masquerade - Nikola Christain - This story was unusual and features consensual infidelity. If you like that kind of thing, this is for you. If you don't, then you've been warned. The writing is okay, but I would have liked more characterization. 3.5 stars.
The Disappeared - Abbigail Clark - This is a beautiful story of married ghosts reuniting after a long year apart. This is really sweet. 4.5 stars.
The Curse of the Donkey Dong - Caitlyn Lynch - This easily the funniest story in the bunch and I laughed out loud at several of the lines. It's a great finish to a good anthology. 5 stars.
This is a great value and I hope that several of these authors branch out into their own works. There's something in here for everyone's tastes, provided you like steamy, sensual romance.
*** I received an ARC from the author. Opinions expressed are my own.
I admit I am a fairly picky reader and if a story fails to grab me within the first few pages, I’ll skip ahead to the next one. I did that with a few, but consider that as a mark of my personal tastes rather than judgment of the story quality. I really enjoyed the variety offered in this selection, from historical to paranormal and (sweetly) mundane Halloween fantasies, with a lot of clear love and trust and communication between all parties involved. My favorites were:
A Love Of Her Own by Moxie Rivers, with a delightful take on modern vampires and a wonderful voice and sense of character that just swept me in. Plus the sex was absolutely delicious!
A Night of Learning by Nyssa Whitehead is another story with a supernatural twist, a lady werewolf and a magician and I just loved how clearly the characters take their time to communicate and discuss nonpenetrative sex. It feels warm and genuine in a way that the supernatural elements add on another lovely layer of fantasy, rather than forcing me to suspend disbelief.
Midnight Masquerade by VT Charbonneau is another great read. It’s briskly paced, fun and geeky (in the very best ways!) and I just love how the characters laugh and banter and bring up condoms. They feel like real people under improbable circumstances and the sex sizzles.
The Disappeared by Abbigal Clark is haunting and lovely and a little more bittersweet than the others in the collection, but still definitely happy enough that I consider myself content.
I’ve read other anthologies from Shenanigans Press and am genuinely delighted in seeing their growth. There’s a pleasure in reading how some of the authors have developed, and an overall sense that the editing and curation has been done to make this feel much more strongly voiced and unique as a whole.
Some of the stories were definitely better than others - my favorites were Under the Moon, The Guardian, A Love of Her Own, The Rising of the Moon, The Disappeared, and The Curse of the Donkey Dong. I really liked the variety of stories, though I would've wished for a bit less supernatural - it's not really my cup of tea!
Ultimately, the stories were great, sexy, and a ton of fun, and what more can you ask for?
