From the Inside Flap
Words That Changed the World
The most important words ever written are the Ten Commandments. These words changed the world when they were first presented at Mt. Sinai to the Israelites, and they are changing it now. They are the foundation stones of Western Civilization. Given their staggering importance, you would think that all societies, and certainly our educational and religious institutions, would be intent on studying them closely. Sadly, this is not the case. Our schools ignore them and our churches and synagogues take them for granted. But here's a simple test: Who among us can even name all of the Ten Commandments? And even among those who can name them, how many can explain them in a way that makes sense to the modern eye and ear?
If you are a person of faith, this book will strengthen it; if you are agnostic, it will force you to rethink your doubts; if you are atheist, it will test your convictions. For people who have thought little about the Ten Commandments, as well as for those who have a sophisticated understanding of them, it will be a revelation.
That's a lot to ask of a little book, but the only thing that’s little here is the length. The ideas are very big.

I sent this book to younger family members and wrote: "Why send this to you? It is not to convert you to any religion. (Nor to atheism or agnosticism.) I have no ideas what your thoughts are about religion. You have in this book an intelligent and sincere explication of The Ten Commandments, which is enough of a recommendation. There is a lot of unintelligent, or misinformed, misunderstanding about these, some more than others. (See Thou Shalt Not Kill...)
"So, first of all, this is an intelligent explanation of an important part of civilization as we know it. It will be a step forward if more people know what the Commandments actually mean before discussing their implications. I am aware that for many they have no implications. But an intelligent person should at least know what they are and what they are intended to say. Dennis Prager comes from a Jewish perspective. He has a gift for clarity of expression, and a gift for bringing Jews and Christians together.
""Second, I very much want you to know that The Ten Commandments do NOT provide "Thou Shalt Not Kill." Perhaps you already know this. If so, bravo!
"That's it. So you can perhaps learn about a seminal document of all history, and so you can know, amidst all of the possible political and cultural arguments swirling around, that the Commandments do not proscribe killing, per se.
"It is not my purpose to engage you in a discussion of theology, but it is important that I make this footnote, lest you misunderstand something. There are indeed Jewish and Christian believers, whole denominations, who argue that obeying the Commandments is not only possible, but required. I am not one of them. Such a discussion is beyond the purview of this letter. I do believe the Commandments came from God and are 'good.'"

Gives an interesting presentation of Jewish viewpoint on their purpose for existence and mission in life.
Worth thinking about, though biblical Christianity understand there is so much more coming in God's
plan for these dear chosen people. Our country is destroying itself by trying to reject both the Jews,
the Christians, and the divine revelation with which God has blessed them both.

Fantastic book!! It goes into depth about how the translation from Hebrew to the King James version of the Bible changed the meaning of the statements, or commandments. I got through it in a couple of hours, and I am almost compelled to read it again. I don't know how informative it would be for a Jewish person, but it certainly was for a protestant.

This book clearly lays out the Ten Commandments and explains briefly, but thoroughly, why each is informative. This would be a great book to study with a church or small group, as there are questions at the end of each section. Highly recommended!

OK, I'm a big fan of Dennis Prager and appreciate much of what he writes here. But this is a very quick fly over of each commandment and if that's what you want you will like the book. I would have liked a little

I am so glad to have discovered this book. I was in the process of losing my faith after my experiences in churches. This book explained the meaning of the commandments from a viewpoint, that God/Jesus followers, other religions, and atheists, can profit from without the bias and restraints of church. This book does a superb job of showing why the commandments are invaluable in creating and sustaining a viable society. I will surely read it again.

I worried that this was going to be too religious or patronising for me. But it isn't at all. It's a conversation about common sense, simple decency, and Dennis Prager explains how our collective and individual measures of good/bad/right/wrong can all be linked back to the Ten Commandments. It's no leap to do the very same for other major religions and belief systems principles.
It was good to read this and be reminded of why We must all stay true to our own moral compass.

Incredible book. With a few words Dennis Prager manages to convince the reader why the Ten Commandments are indispensable to creating a better world, and not just to Jews and Christians. I strongly recommend this book to anyone pursuing good moral standards. This book is a must have.

This book is a short and fun read. A great refresher for any Christian who takes the ten commandments for granted and hasn't thought in depth about the benefits they have brought to Western Civilization.
