I have read Kate McMurray in the past and was not enthused.
Glory be! This time she caught me by the shorthairs and didn't let go. She created characters that I cared about instantly who, I wanted to see succeed. Truth be told, I wanted to know a lot more about Andrew and Charlie's backstory. McMurray used New York City extremely well. You could follow the streets they walked and it was appropriate. I like that. Yes, I wish McMurray had been able to handle the mystery portion of the story in a more procedural way that would have given a lot more weight to the entire the book. I know I'm asking for a lot but this author did her homework and you could see the results of that research. This period of time in New York City was so well studied she might as well continue on and truly documented how they solve crimes.

I was very pleased with the ending. Who knows what would've happened in a true honest past but I'll take it because I enjoyed it. I will admit there were times it made me so sad to know these people truly had to live like that, in the dark, in the shadows, afraid of everything, knowing there was little chance they'd ever have a loving future. Luckily, McMurray pulled it out, forged ahead and was able to keep me, this reader entertained and happy.

Evocative Perfection On Many Levels

The man on the cover is so perfect for this book (except he is missing his small mustache) because he defines Hank Brandt to a T--handsome, masculine, yet evocative of some deep sense of desire. That he is the center of the novel which takes place in late 19th Century Manhattan sets the tone for the plot, and romance, because he is so believable.

Kate McMurray must have lived at that time and have been reincarnated in ours because her grasp of Manhattan during the monstrous heat wave of that period--its sites, smells, indecencies, intrigues, and people--lends credence to the somewhat whole cloth of a plotline which brings Hank and Nicky Sharp together along with a cadre of other well-drawn characters. They include Hank's beloved friend Amelia, and his police department cohort Andrew as well as Nicky's friend Charlie--and the murder suspect, who shall remain anonymous.

I was struck by the amazing portrayal of the somewhat prissy Theodore Roosevelt--accurate on all levels as far as historical documentation is concerned--a stickler for morality aside from the law. The portrayal of William Jennings Bryan, who plays but a small role in the proceedings, is so relevant to our times. The grim reminder that even in the most cosmopolitan of American cities, gay men were still prosecuted and harassed--right up until Stonewall more than 60 years later.

But what we are left with in the end is a beautiful, lovingly developed, romance that churns the pages without so much steam as it does comfort. Hank the cop and Nicky the chanteuse are not a perfect couple, but their need for each other is beyond perfect--it's evocative of everything companionship should be.

What an engaging, loving couple they are, what an engaging, exciting tale they inhabit and pass our way!

Sweet historical love story

I like this author. Her stories are very detailed period stories and she is very good at setting the scene for the time. This is late 19th century New York.

Hank is a police inspector and Nicky is a female impersonator. I very much liked both characters, but Nicky stood out as being memorable. There is a murder, Nicky is a possible witness... you can guess the rest.

But this story is set against a record 10 day heat wave that actually happened, as well as Theodore Roosevelt's position as police commissioner and an election (in which William Jennings Bryan ran as the Democratic nominee). She works these details in seamlessly without making them the focus of the story, which is great.

If I had a wish, it would be that she did not work so hard to smooth the edges off of her characters and stories. Even the ending is a bit too optimistic at a time when being a gay couple was a crime. But it's a very sweet love story and hopefully some people got their happily ever afters.

I didn't check all of her period details, but the bit about electric ceiling fans doesn't read true to me. While they were invented by then, they were hardly in wide use as this is only a few years after electric lighting was available across the city. But maybe she has information that I don't - it's clear that she researched her details pretty carefully.

Being familiar with the history of NY, especially the years when TR "ruled" as a commissioner, this book was a revelation for its portrayal of these 10 hot days in August at the turn of the century. Placing a gay detective falling for one of his suspects layers the plot with a tension that holds your interest throughout. The characters are well drawn and thorough, with motivations that are particularly believable and, n some cases, quite touching. Author Kate McMurray has certainly turned out a hell of a read for fans for mysteries and gay literature. However well her scenes are constructed, however, they are marred by dialogue thats stilted. Perhaps the author was trying to catch a feel for the time period, but whatever her reasons, it too often takes you out of the story. Once the reader gets used to her style, the story flows to a satisfying conclusio and I found myself saying a sad goodbye to the characters, hoping the author will ressurect them some time or other.
