When we’re first introduced to Finn, I was not impressed with his lifestyle of using drinking and drugs to escape his issues. The circumstances of his latest dance with the edge and his family’s intervention put him on a new path—one that puts Ben in his sights, and gives Finn something more to center on. Ben has had his own issues, but has quite a different family life than Finn. They’re slowly drawn together, and their chemistry is evident from the moment they meet. The development of their relationship feels natural, and I love how they are supportive of each other. Everything about them being together feels comfortable, one of those meant-to-be connections.
There’s a good cast of supporting characters, from Finn’s best friend Aiden (I can’t wait for his story!) to his neighbors (especially Rose), and all of Ben’s family. I was not a fan of Finn’s mother and her self-centered attitude almost every moment she was on-page. Family and friends are important to Finn moving on from his past…all of these characters did a great job of rounding out the story, and contributing exactly what was needed for Finn to come to certain realizations as he continues his journey.
It’s hard for me to say much more without putting spoilers in, so I’m just going to leave you with my 4.5-star overall rating, and tell you I’d definitely recommend this book to any M/M romance fan. It does contain adult content including language, adult situations including drug use, and sexual content (some hot and steamy content!), so this story is meant for readers 18+.
OK first indication that this book was really good, I read this straight through in one sitting except for updates and bathroom breaks. I literally just could not put this down. Due to the state of Finn's life at the beginning of the book it was a bit hard to read... a lot of horrible stuff. However once past that I just fell in love with him... he is a truly amazing person who just had a pretty bad childhood and prefers to hide in a drug-induced cloud rather than fact his past. Once out of rehab he moves to a fairly small village to try an get away from what he calls the toxicness of London. He is grumpy and antisocial but that doesn't stop his neighbors from reaching out to him. And then he meets Ben and it's like he can see what his life could be. The thing between Finn and Ben progressed on a glacially slow-burn, 48% and they had just finally kissed. That is just as it should be... anything faster and Finn would have startled like a newborn colt. And Ben had his reasons too. Gotta say the author wrote it to perfection. Oh yeah... and more tears... very good ones though, the author knows how to write endearing very well. I'll let you discover the rest on your own. The character developement was outstanding in this book, and not just the two main characters but the entire cast. That definitely had a lot to do with my many tears happy and sad. The settings for this book were exquisite, I felt like I was there with Ben and Finn every step of the way. Also need to mention Aiden, Finn's best friend. Even though he was not actively present through a lot of the book, he still was there in a big way. This for me was jsut an amazing read that actually was perfectly suited for where I was mentally and emotionally. Now just two quotes I especially liked.
"My chest hurt like someone had stomped on me, and I didn't know why. Anger, sadness and insecurity were fighting for dominance in my head, tearing me apart." ---Finn
"You could walk in there right now and announce you want to be a pretty princess riding a unicorn and sprinkling glitter, and have your own show in Vegas, and your dad will be booking the plane ticket while your mum googles 'specialised unicorn stores near me'." --- Finn
