Editorial Reviews

mewithoutYou returns with their 5th studio album, Ten Stories. Helmed by producer Daniel Smith (Sufian Stevens) and mixed by Brad Wood (Smashing Pumkins), Ten Stories is an allegorical coellection of songs that, at first listen, follows a winding narrative about a circus train crash in 19th century Montana. Long time fans will know that although we are introduced to a talking elephant, fox and tiger there is always more then meets the eye.

Other reviews have said this hearkens back to Brother, Sister, and I won't disagree. Many tracks sound reminiscent of what was heard on "Brother, Sister" and even Catch For Us The Foxes. Those yells we all love are back. Lyrically, several tracks are still down the It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright! rabbit hole, which isn't bad at all. I love the imagery, whether it be treats and foods, animals or circus attractions. Feels as though the ending of "Ten Stories" comes too quickly.

NEW LISTENER INSTRUCTIONS:
My experience with sharing mewithoutYou with friends has been this: you either love it or you hate it.
Typically, upon first listen, my friends hated it. I did too, at first. We asked "what is this?" and protested "he's not even singing!" I promise you, give the album a listen through and really listen, without distractions.
First listen to the sounds and ignore the lyrics. Let the vocals become just another instrument and forget that there are words to be heard.
Next, sit down with the lyric book and go through it again, getting into the words and artwork and feeling the life in each song.

I promise you, it's worth the two listens at least. I have been through this with many friends and I have heard thanks from all of them for introducing them to mewithoutYou.

As for Ten Stories, I love the album so far. On my second listen through aside from select tracks catching my attention.

Ten Stories was actually my introduction to MeWithoutYou and slowly became one of my all time favorite albums to listen through. The more mellow sound of Aaron Weiss in this album made it bearable enough for me to actually start listening compared to their older material. Each song has its own unique style and no song seems to sit and repeat on the same thing over and over (the song evolves as you listen further into it). After you've had some time to sit and listen to the songs, I highly suggest reading through the lyrics of the album to learn the story told within the songs. It really is an amazing feat that they managed to string together such high-level words and still make it musically appealing.

Spotlight songs in my opinion are:
Cardiff Giant
Elephant in the Dock
Nine Stories
Bear's Vision of St. Agnes

It's not their best album, but it has the lead singer from Paramore. And it has a very solid theme (animals). And "Fiji Mermaid" has one of the most amazing climaxes of any mwY song.

There's a lot to love here. Don't miss it.

Amazing CD as you could expect from Mewithoutyou. This is my all time favorite band, as I have yet to find anyone else that is so creative and lyrically intelligent and diverse. I cannot really rate their CDs in a favorite order, as they all have a little different vibe and are all awesome. This one is no different.

I bought this vinyl for the same reason that I buy many vinyls. Firstly, I do listen to them occasionally on my AKG Q701's. That warm music with the transparent *pop's* is so soothing.

But it's now sitting framed on my wall. Mewithoutyou came through and signed it so it's officially inducted into the hipster wall of memories alongside Neutral Milk Hotel, Deerhoof, and others.

And Amazon Autorip was included so it's on my cloud here also. Win/win

mewithoutyou-ten stories is really a decent Christian music CD. It's my first CD by mewithoutyou but I have other songs by them, that is why I bought the CD, I like the group and their music. It's a very mellow CD and is rock. Several melancholy songs, and their very nice rock style pop, a nice CD

I became a fan of mewithoutYou when they first released their album "Brother, Sister." Then they released "It's all Crazy! It's all false! It's all a dream! It's alright" and I was extremely disappointed. I was not a fan of the folk music that came out of their follow up to Brother, Sister, so I debated ordering this CD. But I'm really glad I ordered "Ten Stories." "Ten Stories" is a perfect blend of their previous albums, and is probably their best album yet. If you've never listened to mewithoutYou before, this is a good album to start with, but be sure to listen to it a few times through before deciding whether you like it or not.

This is mewithyou's masterpiece. I feel like they have tweaked their style a few different ways from a-b, each album fantastic but not perfect. Ten stories takes everything that worked from the previous four albums and blends them perfectly. Like any mwy album it does need more than one listen to fully appreciate what they have done. I love that they did a concept album, it plays out nicely. There's not a bad song on this album. If you're new to mwy start here.
